Why can't I convert from Isma'ilism to Ash'arism
There are no pop-up requirements when I hover over the button, its just greyed out and I can't click it. Is this particular to Isma'ilism? Could I convert if I wasn't a Head of Faith? My arch objective is forming the Dar al-Islam Hegemony, if that's relevant.

Yes, being head of faith disallows you to convert. You can however grant the head of faith title to one of your sons (Just give them a barony and then grant the title). Then revoke the barony, and the Head of faith title should get destroyed as they are landless.

Once done go ahead and convert and your son should convert as well.
Think I'll just restart. I was trying to minmax to create a new Islamic faith with advantageous tenets, but I only reached 1070. Of course I shouldn't of assumed a custom ruler of Egypt would have the majority religion of Egypt. Before I restart, you don't happen to know which Islamic faiths don't have temporal heads of faith?

Try hovering over the faith when selecting a ruler in the interface where you set up a campaign. Maybe it should have a short summary, and mention something like

Head of Faith: None
Head of Faith: Vacant
Head of Faith: Joe McJimmybob

None means there is no head of faith in the doctrine.
Vacant means it doesn't exist, but can be created.

Some faiths are also linked to other primary faiths, example the Insular catholics have the roman-catholic pope as head of faith.

Likewise, some of the muslim branch faiths are linked to the primary caliphate or imamate. Example the Sunni should be following the Ashari Caliph, while the Shia should follow Hasan the Missionary as the Zayidi caliph in 867 and the Fatimid Caliph in 1066.

(This might have changed in the recent DLCS though, iirc Hasan isn't a head of faith anymore and not connected to the Hashimid house/dynasty?)

Anyways - when converting to a connected islamic faith, you also get an event to either embrace the current leadership, or to receive a discount to become caliph/imam yourself in the future after getting the required holy site. You cannot reject the leadership though if you don't own any holy sites.

Also, the interface when selecting a ruler prior to starting a game normally doesn't allow much info. You can however cheat around it.

For example, normally a ruler is only shown with his basic personality traits, and no family screen etc.

You can however hover over his title or dynasty, which then shows an underlined link to his name - e.g. "Kingdom of England - Current Holder: William of Normandy"

So you click this link, and voila - you get the regular character screen on the left side, including his family, full title listing, claims, and so on.

This also should work with other info screens which are normally hidden, like titles, dynasties and such. Don't remember if it works on faiths.
