Barons ought to be allowd to have more than one holding
Not sure if this has been brought up but, barons should ( In my humble opinion) be able to hold multiple castle's or if Muslim castle + temple holdings within the same county. This change will be most pronounced in playing as Muslim in now instead of two barony holdings eating up two tax slots now its only one. May also help with the global population... two characters making babies vs one.

Personally I like the current mechanic. But I wouldn't mind to have the same CK2-mechanic like you mentioned it

Barons shouldn't have existed in the first place, for exactly this reason. The rank isn't even playable. They aren't capable of rebelling (barring populist faction weirdness). Baffling decision on PDX's part.

I think baronies exist as a place to appoint family members or courtiers to continue your dynasty lineage and to keep your domain total at or beneath the penalty limit. Vassals and the AI will revoke them as soon as they are able, so they are there for player use primarily.

If you think the population is growing too large bump up plagues in your game or just don't create baronies. If you want to give them multiple baronies give them a county or two.

They also exist to provide Councillors to smaller realms

Barons don't normally choose to get married, and have terrible Fertility regardless. They're effectively courtiers who hold land; the only way to further optimize them is to simply not have them exist.

I just choose from courtiers. I think the AI would rather have an empty counselor slot than give up a domain they could control. :)

Sometimes you don't have enough courtiers though
