Every additional held Kingdom title should allow one additional Duchy title.
The 2 Duchy hard cap has been a mainstay as long as I can remember; but I had really hoped CK3 was going to have some sort of mechanism to add a little more flexibility to the system without sacrificing the feudal balance.

Imho letting players and AI with a Kingdom or higher title hold one additional Duchy for each additional Kingdom title held (ie 2 Kingdoms = 3 Duchies. 4 Kingdoms = 5 Duchies) would allow for just a bit more agency in gameplay without ruining the vision.

there is an option in the rules to increase domains but not duchy's but I think there are afew mods out there that might do it for you if that helps

I appreciate it. There are mods (or one can pretty easily mod themselves) the general hard cap. But to do something like I'm describing where it is based off Kingdoms - or anything else dynamic like that - would require PDX to write it up to my understanding.

Additional duchies are only a -15 opinion penalty to your vassals. That's fairly manageable to have 1 or 2, or even 3, extra if you keep your vassals in line

That said, I don't know why you'd really want more than the 2, or maybe a 3rd. You should really try to have all the counties in your duchies, and the held domain limit usually fits nicely with that.

because duchy titles let you build more duchy buildings? seems logical to me? other then controlling how someone else plays i don't know why you personally care someone else wants more

It is fair that the penalties aren't massive until you start racking up titles, but also I don't see why this or a similar balanced dynamic option can't be at least a rules choice. It seems a bit off for - say an Emperor with 4-5 Kingdom titles to be taking a -45 hit across the board with Vassals for the audacity of having as many Duchies.

I don't care how someone else plays, and I even said you can easily maintain an additional 1-3 duchies. A measley -15 vassal opinion seems like a good trade for the benefit that duchy buildings give.

Additional rules options seem like the way to go with this, I agree

It isn't that far off. No one likes greedy Emperors.

Same here. I think the 2 duchy limit is just fine for my playstyle, and to some extent i think it's also nicer to focus on a singular duchy and contend with a court and actually engage as much as possible with the relationship systems in the game, something that having say 3 or 4 duchies in a kingdom that also has 3 or 4 duchies would not allow.

I think a lot of the "fun" in ck games is to be derived from the different relationship building blocks that you get from being a ruler, a husband, father, lover, religious follower, secret society member, patriarch, patrician, etc. Granted many of those simply don't exist in CK3. But no one is forced to play the inferior title either.

But more customization in the ruleset would always be welcome. If people want to throw the intended balance out the window for their own fun i think they should be able to.

The duchy penalty is controlled by defines, so I don't think it would be possible for a modder to make this style of change.

Personally, I use this: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2220397689
