How is dynasty head determined?
Title. Can't find any info in the game.. At one point I bounced between dynasty head and not head several times.

It's whichever House Head has the most military strength. If another member gains 10% more military strength than the current Dynasty Head, they take the title from them.

But only if they die, but because there is a bug with military power calculation, it is currently instant after a month, when a other house head becomes more powerful than the current dynasty head.

I don't think it's just military power. I just lost the dynasty head when my mercenary contract expire but I've still more troops than the other guy. If he weren't my ally I could just beat him into submission again but at this state I can't take another truce break. God this game is riddled with bugs. Just recovered from the dead child event firing twice for the same kid...

Oddly, both Mercenaries and Holy orders can sometimes affect the numbers. So if you have a particularly strong house member who is just on the boundary of being bigger than you, the house head position will flip flop as the numbers go up and down.

However. I did have an issue where I was no longer house head, and it wouldn't switch back to me. I had somehow tumbled down the line of succession in my own house through being deposed. The house head ended up being a female cousin who I invited to court, she didn't have an army. I ended up creating a cadet branch which overtook everyone in the main house.

So I think you are right, it is not entirely controlled by military strength alone.

Its not sometimes, its just takes your army size and compares it, whoever has more becomes the dynsasty head. So if you hire mercs and holy orders during wars, those will be counted too, wich causes the rapid change of dynasty head sometimes.
Thats how I understand it and ive not seen anything different yet

One would expect that there is some complicated formula at works in the back ground, taking into account titles, max levies & man-at-arms, recent riches, prestige... nope... hiring mercenaries can cheese it. Great job paradox...

No, it can't be military strength at all. Now it just went to someone with 1900 troops total despite me having over 4000 fielded.

It is military strength what determines the Dinasty Head as you can check this in game rules or CK3 wiki.
NorPhi Jul 10, 2022 @ 10:53am
No it isn't. If it were military strength My 2378 raised troops would secure me the dynasty but the game keeps giving it to the guy with 248 troops, dept and disgrace.

Just realised the game also says equal strength in the war screen... His allies add 121 fierce fighters.... ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Now I've to siege down the entire duchy again despite holding everything I want and the capital already...

Strength isn't about numbers. That's why quality is spelled out.

I stack-wiped all of them, including the mercenaries and the allies. He only has 621 levies and 7 knights. I just restarted, the game still thinks he is vastly superior.

Edit: While writing that his army got obliterated by his vassals liberty war. He has 165 troops now and the game finally updated his power rating.

Edit 2: A peasant uprising finally killed that miserable knave.

That's weird. Maybe could be some culture feature... Don't know exactly.

Are you sure you are talking about Dinasty Head not House Head? The threshold for House Head is realm size, not military strength.

No, I created a cadet branch as soon as the game let me. Didn't want to deal with all the hooks. It is the dynasty head that kept flicking forth and back. This nonsense only stopped when the realm of the other guy imploded in the aftermath.

Are you sure they don't have a contract or a holy order? Cuz that can change those too. I have had the game do the flip flop when we were very close in strength and it would sometimes take a few months for it to recognize I was stronger again.
