Unable to choose a new steward

So my character died and was followed by their heir. As the new character, I can't select a steward. The spot on the council is entirely greyed out, and if I click on it to try to put someone in that role, my game either crashes or the message "no one is available" is displayed. Reloading saves doesn't work and the council worked fine prior to succession

Weird. The ONLY time I have not been able to slot is when I do not have enough "personnel" to slot. I have never had this issue you describe so, I assume you are using mods. You could check the CK3 paradox forums to see if anything has popped up recently.

Not using mods and I am a king so staff isn't a problem

Try verifying file integrity.

I have seen posts about this as a known bug on the PDX forum, it happens sometimes on succession with various court advisors, you might want to check and report the bug issue again there - I am guessing it hasn't been fixed with an update yet.

Update: I tried reloading prior to succession and firing my steward. When succession happened, I was able to hire a new steward

I've had a similar gamebreaking issue once, when I married my marshal. Once that happened she was neither my wife/confidant, nor marshal, and both slots in council were rendered unmanageable.

Apparently it was reported on Paradox forums as one should, but still no fix as yet.

This unfortunately happened twice for me over this Christmas break. One of them i was in a really great point and state in my play-through and then the bug happened. No choice but to leave that game.

it just happend to me. its a iron man save so cant reload,
