So, they kinda work like regents, except they share power all the time, not just when you're unable/out-of-the-realm.

They can get events that if they fail they can 'create strife' which is an opinion penalty towards other vassals.

If you want to know what they're good at, click on the 'power sharing' button and hover your cursor over their aptitude, and the tooltip breaks it down further:

Swell armies (i think is what it's called)
Fill Coffers
Promote authority

They're usually not good at all 3 tasks, so make sure you set them to what they're good at.

(I always forget to check, and it isn't until I see my regent/co-monarch screwing up that I remember to change it)

Having a good co-monarch does help in a way after you die, because he earns a base opinion bonus towards YOU, which translates into an 'opinion of predecessor' bonus.

Hmm, I haven't noticed anything serious but...now that Shepherd mentions a few things I begin to wonder if co-monarch doesn't reduce or eliminate the short reign...something I should look at next time I do this.

Heirs trying to overthrow their fathers was more common than you think, as for why in the case of your heir it's probably because he doesn't want to wait any longer
