Couldn't you, theoretically, completely wipe out Catholicism and eliminate the Pope that way? Dead religions should have no head of faith.
Before legends I would think that impossible... but not so sure anymore. :)
Theocratically possible maybe?! lol I think I've seen a head of faith or two struggling around without any counties supporting it...(maybe stays alive if there are AI generated supporters runnin round, never actually thought about that till just this sec)
Even after converting the whole map to my religion, that pope I couldn't get rid of, because I already dismantled the Papacy once.

Creating a new faith is impossible due to the high amount of points I need.
I destroyed conquered Rome but the pope than is just one of my vasals. And I tried 10 times to imprison him but he fled the countryside all the time. All useless...
Some months ago it was possible to destroy the pope's institute when you conquered Rome. So a stupid new move from the developers to f*ck up the game.
Just to see if I got this right... You are currently Roman Catholic, which is the only way the Pope can excommunicate you, and are trying to eliminate the Pope's position as the head of Roman Catholicism?
Who do you think is going to lead your faith?
If there was some way to destroy the Papacy WHILE being Roman Catholic a while back that sounds like they eliminated that bug instead of creating one.
I think I remember them manning and helping to finance a crusade or two to 'defend' the Papacy and its interests. :)
