How do I destroy the Papacy?
Is it a simple matter of just conquering the place or is there some special trick?

Your Faith must give you access to the Decision "Dismantle the Papacy," and you must own all of Italia, while the Pope owns no land to take the Decision. If you can't see the Decision in your Decisions tab, your Faith does not give you access to the Decision, and you therefore cannot destroy the Papacy.

Couldn't you, theoretically, completely wipe out Catholicism and eliminate the Pope that way? Dead religions should have no head of faith.

Before legends I would think that impossible... but not so sure anymore. :)

Theocratically possible maybe?! lol I think I've seen a head of faith or two struggling around without any counties supporting it...(maybe stays alive if there are AI generated supporters runnin round, never actually thought about that till just this sec)

No. Spiritual Head of Faith titles are Landless; they can only be destroyed via scripted events.

the head of faith just move into a different catholic couunty as there are bishoprics everywhere, though they will eventually declare a crusade against you, i was playing as a hellenic adventurer and took the papacy before 900AD and if you dont dismantle them before crusades are possible the entirety of europe will come to fight youu for romagna.

I've only done it before as the Byzantine emperor conquering Rome and taking special decisions.
Danny Jan 2 @ 1:12am
I dismantled the Papacy once with a custom Christian faith which didn't have a head of faith, but a new pope was created by some Insular AI ruler.
Even after converting the whole map to my religion, that pope I couldn't get rid of, because I already dismantled the Papacy once.

It's like roaches, you can stomp one but there'll always be more Popes.

I have now the same annoying fact that every new character emperor of mine gets excommunicated. Maybe it is because I own almost whole of Italy. But is looks like a stupid bug because there is nothing to do to lift the excommunication and it makes the game much harder to play. Also he hands out claims to my realm to other people like about every 10 years or so...

Creating a new faith is impossible due to the high amount of points I need.

I destroyed conquered Rome but the pope than is just one of my vasals. And I tried 10 times to imprison him but he fled the countryside all the time. All useless...
Some months ago it was possible to destroy the pope's institute when you conquered Rome. So a stupid new move from the developers to f*ck up the game.

Just to see if I got this right... You are currently Roman Catholic, which is the only way the Pope can excommunicate you, and are trying to eliminate the Pope's position as the head of Roman Catholicism?

Who do you think is going to lead your faith?

If there was some way to destroy the Papacy WHILE being Roman Catholic a while back that sounds like they eliminated that bug instead of creating one.

Long live the Papacy. Would be interesting to defend it. Which most of Europe would have done at this timeline.

I think I remember them manning and helping to finance a crusade or two to 'defend' the Papacy and its interests. :)
