Where should I start if I want to fight the Mongols?

I'm considering restarting as I've grown tired of the stalemate between my realm and the Holy Roman Empire, also, the constant bombardments of RNG events that sometimes makes no sense is a chore to go through. Where should I start if I want to fight the mongols? Killing the Genghis Khan in battle would be so cool.

In my last playthrough HRE was all of scandanavia and then into russia...mongols capped a few counties out in russia and took over all HRE...

Maybe taking over HRE, throwing away the title succession law, and then just stomping a bunch of stuff.

Mongols are pretty easy now. I mean, if you're decent knowledge on how to line up an attack...when they come in to cap, they spread out a little and you attack at one end, draw them in over time, you can win... but you still need a good sized army. By the time they come in, if you've been taking care of culture, you should have crossbows which work exceptionally well.

HOW ABOUT, you play as a mongol? Load up a 867 start, go all the way over to Mongolia and check that out. its a neat run if yer a decent player. It's not too hard, especially if you've played tribal a bit. There's some in fighting n such goin on over there. Rollin horse archers is real fun. IF you take mongols (or any horse archer culture) and mix em with slavic...man...nothin like a fully packed horse archer/konni army rolling through.

Persia in one of the earlier start dates, conquer a big empire and prepare for the Mongols some hundered years in advance

or Byzantines in the new 1178 start date if you want to start big and powerful

mongol playthrough is easy, tribal government is the best government type and with the horse archers you can steamroll anyone. the only problem with the mongol game is once ghengis khan spawns he inherits your empire and declares on you

Form Mongol yourself and try to defend it when big bad Temujin pops up around 1204. If you start at the 867 there is bastard of house Borjigin in the most eastern area of Mongol near Karakorum.
Empire of Khazaria
Rurikid Novgorod form Russia/Kievan Rus.
Area of Persia and pick your ruler.

1066 start:
Cumania
Seljuks or their vassals in Persia

I think you're 'supposed' to become Genghis Khan playing in the steppe region, not try to fight him (and I think, although I've never played for long enough after a Greatest of Khans run, that then means he doesn't spawn).

When is the Mongol invasion even? I have now about 20 games and always stopped before it appeared because i grew too powerful...
