LOTR Realms in Exile mod vs AGOT mod
I know nothing about GOT while I like LOTR, so I'd rather play RiE

just curious for anyone who's played both which do you prefer though

Both have amazingly beautiful maps, far superior to the vanilla map of Earth. However, both chose time periods to gain mass appeal and in doing so shot themselves in the foot in terms of gameplay. With huge empires covering the majority of the map and very few religions. Once you become the Emperor of Gondor/Mordor/Iron Throne you are invincible and its tedious the only challenge being clicking though meaningless events. If you aren't the huge empire you get steamrolled. RIE at least has more variety in religions/empires.

GOT is currently in a very unpalatable state. Basically the current state of the mod is built to promote bland stability which is not very GOT. None of the world's magical effects are at play, nearly everyone is the same religion (which is canon), there are on average about twice the number of lower titles within a title, everything that boosts domain limit is greatly penalized, and income sources are also cut.

Seriously about 7 baronies per county, about 7 counties per duchy, at least 12 duchies per kingdom, and most kings have 2-4 domain limit. All of that with the only current way to expand being claims, and duchy+ titles require personal ownership of their De Jure capital. I don't know enough about GOT to know if the map depictions are accurate or bloated. However the whole point of the GOT series is that the closer you get to the top liege the more cutthroat keeping your power is. In the current state someone would have to develop a full blown rebellion with most of the vassals involved to have a chance at a king+ title, and the lore says multiple times the situation at the very least could be far more chaotic. All that could be fixed by giving everyone conquest war options which would be canon, or making schemes including fabricating claims somehow easier which would also be canon.

The mod has a lot of potential once the above hiccup is fixed. GOT lore says the noble family that created the Iron Throne title did so by unifying the realm through conquest from the back of the biggest dragon the world has seen. That dragons have dwindled in size from being comparable to mountains to being comparable to house cats. That there is some secret involving intense heat at a key moment which is critical for the growth of dragons. So it is possible for the GOT mod to feature a dragon breeding program where we learn what is required to maintain them.

Another key example of the fantasy elements is the White Walkers. Due to the presence of the White Walkers north of the main story area harsh winters which can last for years plague the people. There is talk of food shortages, and freezing in homes during these long winters. The actual invasions from White Walkers are so bad there is a giant wall, and criminals recruited to man it just to prevent surprise attacks. It is mostly criminal as even with generations between attacks few people want to willingly man this defensive point. White Walkers themselves are a band of liches who summon armies of frozen undead. They along with their army are vulnerable to fire, obsidian which the world calls dragon glass, and Valerian steel. Nothing else will really slow them down as even an arm cut off an undead by something else will still seek to strangle people. Currently no one knows how to smith new Valerian steel, and it currently found as heirloom swords from most old houses. Which is a key indicator that the current upper crust where not always the same.

Sorry for the wall of text.

For GoT the Age Of Heroes would have been a better time (since its all separate Kingdoms) instead of one huge stable empire covering 95% of the map.
So too with RIE setting during the Kinstrife in the South and in the North the splitting of the Empire of Anor into Cardolan, Rhudaur and Arthedain.

Vastly better for gameplay, but no readily identifiable characters for normies. The trouble is when the majority of CKs gameplay is about dynasties (poor or non-existant trade, battles or building) the hook of the relatable characters mostly wears off after one generation and you are stuck in the HRE with Catholicism... one world govt and one world religion is much fun in a ghame either

GoT is heavily unfinished, kinda crazy after all this time it's so barren. What have they been working on? Also, I'll wait until someone replaces the characters to look more like the TV show as a submod.

Agot seems to have picked their bookmark based on the fact that it's the point of the story where magic starts to ''return'' to the world. so working from that bookmark makes sense, but if you played the CK2 mod then you probably want the old bookmark back when the mod is more finished

Both feel rather barebones at the moment. You'll definitely get much more out of LOTR playing as it's major characters. The best Total Conversions imo that're atleast somewhat fleshed out are Princes of Darkness and Elder Kings( with it's submods).

While also barebones, an early access version of After the End is on the workshop. it doesn't have a workshop image or description, but it is indeed the mod.

Both are pretty empty right now as they're very early in development. Game of Thrones mod is the same community that did the ck2 mod, which was the most played start date for ck2 iirc. They have made some good progress, and will create an amazing ck3 mod if they can do even half of what they did for the ck2 mod. So I'd probably hedge my bets there but I will def play both.

These and I'd mention Godherja and Guardians of Azeroth 2 as notable mentions too, but still early on in dev like most total conversions. Anbennar as well when it gets further along in development
