Illegitimate Children
So my character is on a 16 month pilgrimage, and around 8 months his wife (back home) gets pregnant.

Now normally, I'd assume the kid is illegitimate.

However, the game doesn't recognize this as such ... at least the many times in my recent playing, as this happens a lot.

So is this a game "bug" and the kid is legitimate ... or can we assume the kid is a bastard?

Thanks in advance!

The kid is likely legit. The game does not take into account distance from each. Its same logic as seducing and impregnating someone 3 kingdoms over that have never been in the same room as each other.
Legitimacy is affirmed unless proven otherwise. They'll only be listed as a bastard if they are found out to be. You can spy on your court to try find the secret, if it exists.

The child may be legitimate though. Like Bloodsong said, I'm sure it doesn't take distance into account.
Game doesn't care how far apart you are or what either of you are doing for a 'pregnancy check'. Just the relationship, the interval, the fertility, and how many children you have.

You can either consider it that you somehow managed to arrange a tryst or amend your 'how babies are made' story to be 'When a mommy and daddy love each other very much they don't even need to be in the same room.'

Okay, that's what I sort of figured about the "distance check."

It was happening quite a bit, but I just wanted to see if others noted the same. Thanks for responding!
The above postings are correct. That said unless your wife is caught, the legitimacy of any and all offspring is a 'secret' if they are illegitimate. If you've truly have suspicions set your spymaster on a 'discover secrets' tasking on your capital and be prepared for a long wait to discover the truth.
Could easily be legitimate.
Only way to know for sure if it's your kid is with debug enabled.
See, playing a matriarchy avoids questions of legitimacy 100%, unless you deliberately create the requisite circumstances.
at night time, when everyone is sleeping at the pilgrimage site, you run alllllll the way back home just to check in to see if the wife is messing around, then you get a lil busy, and run allllll the way back before everyone wakes up.

The AI definately thinks thats how the "birds and bees" work.
