Will Vassals ever assist in a war?

I know you can't call them into wars, even if they are your allies, which makes no sense to me, whats the point of making an alliance with your vassal if they don't help you with wars.

Im just curious if vassles will ever join your wars at all. Last run i did as ireland my vassals never once helped in any of my wars. Even the times their portion of land was at risk. But i'm playing a new run where im a duke in east francia, and im a vassal of my father. Hes in a war in defense of our kingdom and i can choose to help if i want to, or offer to assist in his war.

I'm just wondering why it seems AI vassals never offer to help when im a king but when im a duke of a king i have the option to fend off the enemies in my kings war or even offer to join.

An alliance with a vassal only prevents rebellions. They will not join in your wars, nor will you join in theirs.

They're already helping you by giving you levy troops through vassal obligations.

Vassals provide troops towards your Levies. Some have had to defend themselves against claims and have no levies to offer at the moment.
This is why you have to be careful about what Vassals are given lands because someone with a competing claim will make a fuss over it.

The only time I really find it annoying that vassals don't join your war is when you're defending and all/part of their land is the war target. In that case they should automatically be added to the war on your side.

Yeah, i agree with you on that. I even had the same vassal as i try to defend their land from use the opportunity to go to war against me in a faction rebelion. Only because i lost some troops while defending, who made the faction considered strong enough to rebel.
