Well there is no historic absolute proof of his age in year 867. Much of what we see with characters and realms in 867 is a fictional representation of what the developers believed to be at that given time. Year 1066 becomes more realistic.
Ivar seems fairly "popular" with players, so I wouldn't be surprised if they lowered the age so that people can play as him for a bit longer and create more of a legacy. If they started him in his 70s, like some historians speculate he'd be in 867, the player would get very little time as him.

I don't understand why his age may seem as an issue? His young age works out since most players choose him and may enjoy to rule longer as him. Perhaps an age change to the children he starts out with would be more sufficient.
