I started with a only 2 domain limit?
This makes no sense because you get 2 to start and I should have gotten another 3 for having an 18 Stewardship.

Well first Stewardship doesn't give domain limit anymore, level of your education and some traits do.

Also what is your government? Nomads, Mandala, Japan are hard resctricted in domain limit.
Thanks. I hadn't played in over a year so I didn't know that about Stewardship. I am playing the Welsh.

The education traits are now the most important factor

LVL1 = -1
LVL2 = +0
LVL3 = +1
LVL4 = +2
LVL5 = +3

Other factors do usually not change much once you obtain them, for example only your highest rank title counts for up to +4 as emperor and thus won't increase nor decrease, likewise you only unlock two innovations for another +1 once.

So if you want to maintain the same domain in between generations, you need to make sure the heirs get the best education possible.

Welsh are feudal under normal circumstance. So you have no max domain limit imposed on your character.

The only problem will be your education trait. Like poster above me said.
The change now means all character education get similar domain limit so heir should recieve similar limit to their parents without needing to put everything into stewardship.
Thanks guys. As mentioned I upped the Stewardship thinking this would do it. And I like money. LOL. I could easily have put a few more points in education to at least get the plus 1. I am so used to having 3 or 4 domain limit to start, I didn't even notice until I took my third county total it was only 2. LOL. I thought it was a bug. Luckily, I do always promote as much education as I can with the kids so I am going to check now how well they are doing but they should be good.

Just wondering before I play again. If I set my spouse to up the rulers education, would that increase the domain limit if I passed the threshold? I know my last play through he bumped my ruler to 31 Stewardship and the money was flowing in. So it sounds like it would.

Spouses don't effect your education trait. Again, stewardship does not impact domain limit so having the spouse do something to raise it would do nothing. You need to increase your education trait by studying at a university or starting with a higher one.
There is a game option to increase every rulers domain limit up to +3.
Its a poor design choice to change it from stewardship to education level. The flexibility of the stewardship bonus makes it manageable, but something practically static like the education level is so unreliable and punishing.

I'm actually surprised they did this change, instead of fixing some of the ways a few players bloat their stats. Is this essentially a mp balance fix? Because those almost always suck.
There is a mod that reverts the rules back to Stewardship giving domain limit if you want it.

You can attend university and get a better education trait to increase limit so it's not THAT static.
