how do you find a good antiquarian?
I assume you need someone with an inspiration? Only there's no good way to search for them in the character finder and even harder to recruit people to your court. Most of my antiquarians are always 'poor' quality.

Press C
Filter for inspired
Recruit if possible
Marry to courtier if not able to recruit.

There you go.

Wow how have I never noticed that filter? I kept trying to do a word-search . . .

Thanks a ton. I created some new filter presets as well. Can't believe I never noticed that.

Quite sure that you can never recruit inspired people, unless you have a hook. Perhaps you mean "completed inspiration" since these get a +30 bonus as antiquarian.

The antiquarian only repairs and preserves your artifacts, reducing their decay rate and protecting them during sieges. So anyone with a decent aptitude is good enough.

You can check the aptitude factors and other conditions here

You can recruit inspired characters. It would make the inspired filter quite useless if you couldn’t.

It is near impossible to recruit someone who is actively working on an inspiration.

Doesn't it also affect the quality of created artifacts? My artifacts are always fairly crap, unless they come from stewardship events where you buy a trinket or diplomacy where you commission epics (those by comparison are quite easy to get masterwork artifacts).

Mainly I got frustrated when my antiquarian destroyed an artifact he was trying to improve (to be fair it was RNG and I took the risk, but perhaps the odds would be better with a better antiquarian). I assumed it was because he was poor in aptitude (and still better than anyone else in my court, sadly). That 30+ aptitude for having an inspiration seems to be a make-or-break as far as having a good or excellent antiquarian.

No, it's just the artificer and poet having a chance to get inspired depending on aptitude.

https://ck3.paradoxwikis.com/Artifacts#Creating_artifacts

Improved quality only comes from (iirc) certain cultural traditions. And having a high court grandeur does vastly increase the chance of top skilled inspired people arriving at your court. Lodging standard levels increase the chance of artifacts being of higher quality. And of course there are all these events which may or may not increase / reduce the chance of quality improvements.

With level 10 you're basically being bombed with blue and purple artifacts.

Just launched the game to test:

Base reluctance is -50

Inspired is -50

Opinion is capped at +25

Lodging standards are capped at +50

You sure this isn't a mod ?

Check the chance breakdown on the interaction.

This is probably because "homeless wanderer can be persuaded" which isn't available for guests or courtiers.

Can tell because Bianca Savazzi is a developer avatar, these usually start as wanderers

What does that matter? You can recruit inspired characters.

You can't, without a hook. Because the lodging standards and opinion don't break the -50 from being inspired.

Don't avoid the question, check the breakdown on what increases the acceptance to >=0

Maybe that's why I'm struggling. I don't have the royal court DLC.

You can invite just about anyone who is your same religion. Taking grandeur over expected, splendor, amenities and opinion into consideration. It only gets difficult when someone holds a court position.

Antiquarian isn’t a problem.
Physician is. I still remember Physician botched healing of my heir despite having 16 knowledge

Physicians are easy to find too.

Press C
Search renown physician in the search
Invite if possible or marry a courtier to them.

I’m thinking your on to something here. I admit I haven’t played in months but when RC first came out it was much easier to recruit inspired characters.

Is the homeless wanderer a new buff to invite acceptance? I never noticed it before.
