How do you BREAK ALLIANCE?
is there a way to get rid of alliances that are too small, or just insignificant for my realm?

Alliance by marriage - divorce, assassination.
Alliance via diplomacy perk - dunno, never tried :)

Right click on their portrait, there is an option to break the alliance. I don't know if it works for all alliances, though. I used it to break my alliance with brother Ivar as Hvitserk.

Nope..doesn't give me that option. Just arrange marriage..no choice of breaking it.

I wondered this as I could find no way other than a costly declaration of war against them :(

You can break an alliance with foreign realms by declaring war, which costs a lot.
A negotiated alliance with vassals can only be broken with assassination.

However the random alliances you get from congenital breeding, you can simply ignore them. Say no to their call to war, there are no disadvantages.

On the topic of alliances, is there even a point to having your vassal as an ally? You cannot call on them during your own war and they keep getting into trouble because they think you got their back.

They are unable to join factions against you. Might get a relation bonus as well.

It's useful if you can get them to ally with you for free when they're related.

Not worth it if you have to use your marriage slots for it.

They are locked out of any faction. In turn, you are locked out of certain hostile actions against them (like revoking titles).

And they can call you to war for their external wars (respectively you can join at will), can be good if you want to support their conquest without having to pay for the war. You also get all the prestige upon winning, and a massive opinion boost.

Also for Clan government, they expect you to have an alliance or have a massive opinion malus. Which from what i can tell, only works through marriage. Hence the "Clan" idea of all dynasties in the realm being related.
