Wow, I haven't seen this, but if it's true it's very important to know. Maybe your title had some special inheritance rule? Some do.
I thought that was the reverse?
I thought that was the reverse? [/quote]
It is reversed Confederate does mean that "new titles are created" So when I had finally switched to regular Partition. Upon Death, It switched my Succession back to Confederate first (because my Heir's culture was different), Then divided up my titles and created new kingdoms for my heirs.
Wow, that is so counter-intuitive.
I figured, ok I fought through... Stopped expanding for a few generations. Keep my lands small.
Got the law changed finally... Changed from Confederate to Partition. Finally have some security in my kingdom. I can start expanding out.
Upon Death, law changes and I lose again 80% (probably more) of my holdings to new kingdoms.
So basically have to start over again....
Now what happens when I get to the next era and switch to Primogeniture. Start investing the time and energy building up my select countries for my leader... Now a new culture creeps in to my gene pool some where and I lose everything again.
And the way culture can sneak in. Especially when you don't have control of all your heirs or your heirs, heirs... AND let's not forget how freaking easy it is to loose people in war leaving you in situations where you could be handing your land off to a nephew or great nephew . This whole starting over scenario could happen many many different times and in different ways. All without any real control from you as the player.
It really is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and it totally makes me ANGRY!
I have over 3400 hours in CK2. I have over 80 hours now in CK3, so I don't see myself as just some "novice" player. To me the lack of security and possible loosing everything and starting over mid game like that, totally takes the fun out of it.
I'm probably a good 16 - 20 hours in to this specific game, and at this point it just feels like crap. I have no desire to pick it back up.
I know what you mean, although my problem was going from pagan to feudal only to be hamstrung in every branch of the game (a topic for other threads, I'm sure).
I can only tell you how I deal with that frustration. I narrate away the inadequacies of the mechanics and ai with a "storyline" and then i just allow the plot to develop.
E.g. My family holds three separate kingdoms within my empire, but all are held by queens who decided they don't care that a non-matrilineal marriage is going to lose these titles for my dynasty (while at the same time finding cadet branches that will die with them...). So I just narrate it away. Obviously a wave of anti-familial sentiment spread through my dynasty and women chose to use their power to hurt the patriarchal nature of the whole arrangement by losing these titles to other houses.
In your case? Well "surely what happened was" that they all wanted the child king, but then when he was getting crowned, they noticed a birth mark on his shoulder the shape of devil's horns, which obviously meant the child was cursed and they had to reevaluate.
As for having to work back up. Very likely one of your daughters' heirs is also your heir. It hurts less with the dynasty mechanic. Just for now you'll be playing as someone minor on the outskirts. You could create a cadet branch? Make this the story of how that child was cast aside, only to lay the foundations for the takeover of the Kingdom by his children!
For the record, Partition is exactly like Confederate Partition except that it won't create titles that don't exist. So if you haven't formed a specific duchy or kingdom, or you destroy it, succession won't re-create it so it can be given to a younger son.
You cant name em but you cant decide who they marry either (well you can arrange a marriage to some random courtier lol)
So yeah its totally possible your kids ruin everything for you lol
2 things you can do... Make sure your heirs oldest son is a ward at your court with someone your culture.
Should they really change disinherit em. Reknown is a resource... its pretty expensive for an heir but i disinherited mine twice already (cause they sucked) and executed another cause he deserved it... (he murdered my 1 year old son who had herculean trait)
Also whatever lands they hold premium title have your council dude change culture of that region to yours.
