Which holding should I lease to my new holy order?
I found a holy order in a city, in Porto. It had two heavy infantry divisions to it. That was far from my capital in the Netherlands, but I had little choice since I was still tribal.

A while after I reformed my religion and I'm about to settle a new order. This one for the long run.

Does anyone know if there's any difference between handing them a castle or a city?

Is there any pros and cons to lease them a holding in a county I want to keep for myself? Or should I settle them in one I'm planning to hand over to a vassal?

It doesn't actually matter either way, so give them the poorest city you have. They'll still always have the same ~800 levies and 2-300 Men-at-arms. They don't get bonuses from buildings, either to levies or to MAA stats, and while they will get income from castles, but not from cities because of holding types, they don't actually use the income for anything.

Just give them a city in a county you're planning to give to a vassal and forget it exists.

I feel a city would be better, because cities are larger, but yet to build an extra barony you need to build the other stuff. Making me feel the extra barony is more valuable. So my uninformed guess is barony castle is better. But would like to know the real answer also.

City's might be bugged, it says wrong holding type to me despite it being one of the recommened ones? Eh, they work, but they're basically just sqautting in Glasgow and pay no taxes...

I'd complain, except they are the main driving force in my holy wars and they're free. I think they even help in rebellions.

The only crime is that they're so good, I'm not the only one that thinks so, the A.I hires them out 99% of the time that I literally don't start holy wars unless I'm sure I can hire them first.

Yes, my guess is that they should get armies like a normal ruler, and Baronies produce more levies.

OK, taking note here... "Before starting a holly war, check Glasgow."

Castles, ONLY Castles
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

I gave them a newly built city, but this makes them a "wrong type" holder and they can never upgrade it.

Afterwards they keep asking for more cities to lease, and they never move into those.

Even if they have a castle and you gift the grandmaster 1k gold they still don't upgrade it, even after 10 years. They spend the gold almost immediately on something or other, but not troops or buildings. Maybe hookers.

Exactly why you should give them Castles

To make sure the men have enough money for hookers

Can you vassalize them?

No, they are like mercenaries, but free (if the cause is just).
