"Pops" as a mechanic didn't really exist until well into the late EU4 period.
I even prefer this game over CK2 with all the DLC included.
It has diplomacy and politics, both will be expanded upon as the game is developed further over the years. Trading and citizen class were never a part of CK - those are things that don't play a part. We are to assume those things are happening in the background, out of our control. Basically everybody who is not a noble has no rights, except the right to till the fields 16 hours a day for their lord.
I do agree though, it's kinda shallow right now. I'm finding it difficult to fire the game up after 60 hours.
