Forming Scotland
Does anyone know how to form Scotland at the first start date? Do you have to be a northern ruler of England?

Scotland is a Kingdom title and you need to meet the requirements of that in order to create that title.

In Kingdom view the map says that you need to be in control of 14 of the 26 De Jure counties in Scotland to be eligible to create the Scotland Kingdom title. You won't have that in 867 AD.

...so scotland isn't there at the start of the game?

Edit: Alba isn't scotland?
Edit Edit: Also, can someone tell me how to form Ireland. I keep forming Éire.

You have formed Ireland.

Eire is Irish for Ireland. :)

Alba is what Scotland was before it was called Scotland.

Its all about titles and border and right for taxation...same as today in fact.

For example the United States of America didn't exist at all 300 years ago but the lands and counties owned by the natives did. They aren't native American's until Amerigo Vespucci as he give that entire continent his name.

I have not figured out Scotland. In my current game, I started off as Alba and got most of England AND Ireland... and pfft... no option to form Scotland. I did form the Empire of Britain, though and England as well... but only Alba

As for Ireland you need most of the Dutchy and Counties and you can form the Kingdom of Ireland.

I already formed it, but you get the picture...

I have seen the computer use Scotland... but there is no Scotland title. I do not THINK the computer renames titles - does it?

Yet, I can not find a Scotland in the title search... but if you start the game in the late game the 1000s, you will see "Scotland"

Scotland is a Kingdom title. The Kingdom of Scotland didn't exist in 867 AD. It is what you have to aim for conquering enough to meet it's De Jure requirements.

England, as it is now, and I'm talking about titles and borders, did not exist in 867AD.

Look at the history of every country in the world. Their titles and borders now are not those that existed in 867AD, in some cases even 50 years ago.

As an aside I have seen other people talking about the AI renaming Kingdom titles which sounds like a bug if that is happening but its not something I've seen.

Yes. If you start as Northumbria you'll get an event a few years in allowing you to choose whether to remain Anglo-Saxon or form the new Scottish culture. If you become Scots then conquering Alba will allow you to form the kingdom of Scotland. Although you'll also start at war with Jorvik and the Kingdom of the Isles and face frequent Viking raids, so good luck with that :P

Titles will change according to the culture that owns it, and place names will change according to their culture. If you convert Dun Holm from Saxon to Norman for example it'll adopt it's modern Norman name of Durham (and flip back to Dun Holm if you convert it back to Saxon).

Ah OK so Angle-Land vs Danelaw then for England...excellent. That's a good addition. I'm not letting those Vikes get to Danelaw.

Thank you everyone for all the answers.

Add me if you would like to play sometime!
I just want to say I was able to form Scotland after I took control of enough land. I was playing a Norse ruler at the time.

Going for Pictish revival, taking over the Kingdom title from Alba as a Pictish ruler, turned the name into "Pictland". So yeah, spot on, it's the culture that changes the name.
