With respect to many people, many people are idiots. There's only one DLC thus far and it's only useful in the least if you play in Scandinavia, 867. Even without it, you can still play as pagan vikings, you just miss out on some really nice appearance changes and some features specific to that region and that timeframe, such as shieldmaidens and bluts.
Despite this, many of us have logged hundreds, even over a thousand hours.
The Question you should ask is, how much will it cost the royal edition when the big expansion is released? (I hope at least in November..?) Would you prefer to buy it now ? or buy the season pass later if you want to start playing now? Will the season pass get a better discount than now? I don't know, i doubt. Maybe the base game is going to have a better discount.
Have fun!
CK3 is 100% playable without the DLC, the DLC simply give additional content/mechanisms in the game.
You can buy the Royal Edition so you can get the 2 mini DLC and wait for the Large one to come out or you can wait for the large out to come out and buy the DLC separately.
Its up to you OP, good luck.
