Any way to DECLINE becoming the Byzantine emperor?
I already loved playing there, and with this update I'm having more fun than ever. But I hate and have no interest in actually becoming the emperor. As in, none at all. But if I'm using these new systems correctly it seems no matter what I do, one day I'll just magically become the top dog, and I hate it. I am aware I can become an adventurer again, but starting all over again is frustrating.

Any tips? Or is there a mod I missed while searching? Any help much appreciated!

They added a way to opt out of inheriting titles through the learning lifestyle. On the far left tree second skill down called carefree.

It used to only lower stress gain but now also gives you a decision to reject all titles you would inherit. Have yet to use it but I assume it works similar to declaring yourself celibate.

Edit: Unfortunately not, contracts between vassal and liege are considered feudal contracts so if you're an administrative vassal you don't have those rights.

Hell yeah, nice! My eyes must have glazed over that option. Also that's dumb you have to keep fighting conversion. Super, incredibly stupid. Guess I'll just use cheat menu to make the emperor my own religion, ugh.

If you're playing in an Admin realm as an Admin vassal, you should just be able to boost the candidacy of another through influence, no?

As for the conversion stuff: With how admin realms have official faiths, you can't have religious protection, even irl byzantine vassals with different religions weren't integrated within the empire, but a tributary system isnt implemented in the game... yet
it could be rng luck for me, but i had interacttion with emperor on right click "Forgive my sins" or something like that, what made Emperor forgive me being a criminal by having different faith and they never bothered me with faith change.

Reject Inheritance and get Gallivanter trait, HRE has its own similar decision

Just use your mountain of influence to elect someone else?

Promote others and invest in them. It's pretty easy to get any theme or lose one if you put any effort into the system. It's nowhere even close to the headache that is being a vassal in the HRE.
