You might have to (at least initially) do specific challenges that you are good at, but there are so many ways to build up your character during play that I doubt it'd be a long term problem if you decided to switch part way through.
A lot of your success chances come from your agents. With a maxed group of the right knights you can hit the 90+% chances in 5 scheme cycles without needing much skill yourself in the abilities.
Additionally get some money and you can buy like 10 prowess easy with some armour and a weapon in any city.
Travelling around will let you max out both traveller tracks which is a +2 to diplomacy, learning, stewardship and prowess.
Similarly you can compete in hunts, and tournaments to unlock a bunch of benefits as well.
I made a character in cologne, who was a giant, athletic and herculean (maybe also strong, not sure). Then I added slow and reduced all his stats (aside from progress) as low as possible. Not sure on his character traits, I think it was glutton and honest. Also lowest military education trait.
Anyways, he had 2 in martial and the rest was 0. He could basically crush anyone but was a complete moron. A moron who decided, after winning 20 gold and some prestige in his villages fair (backstory to explain money), to start his own mercenary group with two dudes he stumbled across.
What happened to me in that run:
After a rough start, he slowly settled into it, but was only really good at prowess and decent at military contracts. He laid a nice foundation for his son.. but when he returned to his hometown in his 50s he got the option to lead a cultural revolt against the archbishop. So he did some jobs for the king (to get a hook) and he just handed me the duchy so that it shall be franconian again and not in the hands of a *dutch*.
Currently playing his son and already preparing to head out again. I was curious about what happened with that decision and wanted to make some cultural changes.
His son was lustful, glutton and rakish. And in general a smarter but weaker version of his father. So he partied the money away and sowed a lot of bastards.
I am currently planning to select one of the bastards as my next player character. Maybe even turn them into a monk/nun and try out how that shall work. :D
How is that even possible with the limit for offspring/children?
