Can you abdicate to be a adventurer after having land?
Long story short I was doing mercenary work in the Byzantines. Played around, schemed etc, and became the emperor. Fun for a little while but I want to go back to adventuring without going back to my old previous save file. I also have a son who is next in line for the empire. Anyway, can I just abdicate and let him go for it? While I adventure around? Is it even possible for a player?

I'm not sure for an Emperor, but definitely for a Duke or Count. There's some requirements you can see if you play as the Hauteville ruler in 1066. Requirements like certain cultural traditions and no more than 3 domain counties. I don't think you'd be able to do that as an Emperor though. Maybe try giving away all your counties except Constantinople and losing to a claimant faction ?

The decision to become an Adventurer requires you to be Duke-tier or lower, and have one of a few cultural Traditions. So no, you cannot just abdicate as an emperor.

However, when you die, you can "Choose Another Destiny," which will often, if not always, allow you to play an Adventurer of your dynasty. Your non-heirs may also sometimes set off as Adventurers via event during your lifetime, which will present you the option of switching to that character instantly.

TL;DR: Kill yourself

Own a county with a culture that has a tradition that allows you to become an adventurer. For example, Horse Lords or Coastal Warriors.
Make sure, that you don't have any kingdom titles.
Let a claimant faction win a war against you so lose the empire title and revert to being a duke.
Make the county with the adventurer culture your capital, convert to the local culture or hybridise a new one.
Abdicate and hit the road.

Installing your son as the emperor is another matter though.

Hmm interesting i didn't know it was limited to being a duke / cultural. The best I came up with in my situation is just creating many Kingdom titles. Give it around dynasty members within the empire. Lose a claimant war. Diverge culture and bounce. Hope as time goes on my dynasty will take over the empire if ever and just go adventuring
