Adventuring with landless heir while waiting for dad to die?

I haven't been able to find anything that tells me whether I'll be able to start a game with a landless adventurer character who's already designated as first in line to inherit; it could be fun to bang around and be developing skills and comrades while dad's still on the throne. For example, start a run as the 16 year old heir instead of the 35-45-55 year old ruler, anticipating normal inheritance eventually while letting dad run things. Will this be possible?

I'm guessing but I'm sure you can just choose to play as the son or daughter of a ruler and go on adventure while your mom or dad is still alive.
