is there any modern version of ck3
The news about the taliban had me wondering is there a daring/avant garde AA or AAA title that dares to take on modern politics, not in a whitewashed nice playbox like civ6, but one that tackles terrorism, extremism, censorship, militancy?

I mean there's Rebel Inc. and Suzerain but they're not that much like CK3

Suzerain and I think the older Tropico games are pretty blunt and "realistic" political strategy games, but they're nowhere near as grand-scale as any of the pdx titles.

Funny you mention that, I was about to do an Afghanistan speedrun as the Taliban.

EDIT: Haven't played it myself but have you considered Hearts of Iron IV?

I was definitely heavily looking into hearts of iron 4, but again the recent news has me thirsting for something truly modern, not just a sort of rosy eyed repackaging of the past, something that dares to make you think about the current world.

Sadly, I don't think it exists in 2021 the year of our lord. The trouble is a large scope strategy game requires a hell of a budget, and I'm not sure anyone is willing to assign that kind of money to develop a risky, controversial project that allows people to explore modern history and politics through an emotionally detached, pragmatic lense with no biases. Like an unrestrictive sandbox without whitewashing any recent events in favor of any local/foreign markets.

Large developers don't even have the balls make projects about a fictional Chinese invasion of the west, they use North Korea in their stead (Homefront comes to mind) which makes zero sense. I mean I'd love to see it, and someone is welcome to prove me wrong, but I don't think that game will exist for a long time, if ever.

Yea you're probably right, it's too risky. I guess the cowardly argument goes something like "well I want my game to reach a large audience and be inclusive (give me points for using a buzzword please can't you see I'm virtue signalling?), and most gamers I think want to escape real life so I'm not going to risk taking on controversial subjects like modern war and politics."

Btw about hearts of iron 4, I've heard really good things about it but I'm still on the fence. What do you think about it vs ck3? I've heard it feels dated compared to ck3 in terms of presentation. My reasoning right now is hoI4 is probably past its heyday at this point and I'd rather see what HOI5 has to offer after they update their game design.

What. But HoI4 was released like yesterday. It's still a new game

Its less about the literal age, more about the setting and the execution.

Wasn't it 2016 or earlier? I feel like I managed to hear about it as it already hit its peak. I think I can wait for the next one.

There's not gonna be a next one for a long time. EU4 is 3 years older than HOI4 and still have not announced a sequel. CK2 got CK3 after 8 years, and Vic2 is getting Vic3 after 11+ years

HOI4 just turned 5

From what I have heard this game is pretty similar to what you want. The game is made by a small company, and it doesn't have the most modern UI or graphics, but the gameplay should be similar to what you desire.

There is Afghanistan '11. It isn't a global map type game, but rather taking place in a region of Afghanistan. There's also some war games (too complicated for me probably) like Command: Modern Operations.
Oh that reminds me I forgot Invasion Machine
