Succession is one of the most difficult times, when playing as king/emperor, as most fiefs are not held by you, which means that a lot of power and strength is out of your control. So you need to prepare accordingly to ensure that your heir will inherit things smoothly. Your heir will inherit a bunch of opinion boosts/dread (depending on how you ruled) from your previous character, this can help offset the short reign/legitimacy loss, but generally you want to initiate an activity straight away to reinforce this/boost it. So after your character dies, hold a feast/funeral (if you have the dlc), this will help get opinion of you up to prevent vassals from being lured in by factions. The other main thing you’ll want is a massive gold reserve. Activities are expensive, and you’ll want to bribe some of the vassals in factions that sorta like you/kinda sitting on the fence to help reduce their strength, and be able to hire mercenaries if things end up in a war.
Apart from that, you’ll want to make alliances either internally (to keep vassals out of factions) or externally for additional support (so marry off extra daughters and sons). You’ll typically prefer to have a son as an heir, want any children inheriting to be adults, and make sure you’re maxed out on what you can afford for men at arms, in order to help minimize faction formation (or at least buy you time to prepare).
Don't give up. Once you earn back all your stuff, you will definitely appreciate all the hard work you did.
Good Luck
