Women and children can only have their claims pressed if who you are going to replace with their 'more legitimate' claim is of equal or lesser standing claim wise - they cannot be men in good standing in a male dominated society. The ruler must have 'questionable' legitimacy (A woman, child, excommunicated, revocable sinful, criminal, etc.) - they must be culturally or religiously questionable rulers.
Men, in male only and male preferred societies/faiths, can claim against anyone. They will be of equal or greater 'legitimacy'.
You can give her the title after you take it for yourself if you want though - but you still have to make her a courtier first.
It should stay a Republic. You should only have that vassal there until they die, and then they will be replaced by a seemingly random new vassal since it is not a dynasty based system. You can do many strange things with 'Republics' if you grant them additional titles. The inheritance goes out of your control, but the more titles you give them the bigger the Republic becomes.
I've accidentally turned whole duchies/kingdoms (Crete) into Republics by granting a dynasty member a city holding and then adding titles to them. Revoke a city title, grant it to a housed noble, and then grant them additional titles. Crete is now a Republic... that no longer will be in your dynasty when the current ruler dies. :(
Ah cool thanks I will give it a shot! Appreciate the help, was totally confusing, I know I did it a year or more ago but I had someone run to my court and ask me to press their claim.
Awesome about Crete also, I almost always take it early.
