Mongol invasion ruins the game
The fact that they only need to conquere a few provinces to defeat Byzantine or the HRE is ridiculous, because the defenders only get the troops of the emperor.
How stupid is that? This is an existential thread, the AI should be able to mobilise just like in a crusade.

I was playing as Burgundy, so yea, I couldn't even support either of them. Just had to wait till they captured both, before I could start attacking them.

However, you can only declare a holy war for kingdom once in a lifetime and even then, once the Mongols captured they leave a mess behind. After reclaiming a kingdom you have to manage dozens of titles which ends in a even greater mess in culture and religion.

So it's up to me now to conquere all things back and shape a new Europe... that is what I call mappainting. And it's freaking boring.

But even better, after some time the mongols shattered leaving a total mess behind, because they get countless provinces for free.

No thanks. This is absolute BS.

Edit: Loaded an old save, conquered a province in Egypt to be close to the Khan and then murdered him and the next 2. So once the 3rd Khan is dead they shatter. Still, this whole mechanic is garbage.

they are literally the end game boss of conquering territory IRL lol

It is still pretty silly they can conquer Empire titles by attacking the periphery though, their unique CB should probably work differently now given that Conquest CB are significantly faster. Something like being able to take any titles of the territory they control (or have enough of to usurp higher titles) when the War Score ticks to 100% , which would let them take territory from big empires that can't respond quickly enough without somehow shattering Byzantine by taking 3 counties on the periphery, they could still eventually do so by just chipping away until Vassal discontent from War loss or the Obscurity Rules shattered the titles.

Meh.

They tend to grow pretty large, but they are still not programed properly, they don't make decent MAA, they don't seem to station them in relevant counties according to the building types, and they don't seem to care about knights or their mechanics just the same as any other AI.

As a result you can still stackwipe them with half your MAA slots being used, even while being "countered", still not challenging in any way.

It's the only thing remotely interesting and menacing that is happening in the late game. Also it is historicially acurate (more or less) as the Mongols actually did conquer half the world.
