Are you using the Viking fellow from the adventurers start? If so then the king of france wants your head and is doing everything including throwing the kitchen sink to kill you.

Go on a viking adventure and take land elsewhere, my prefered target is the pope because he doesn't have enough money to repel me at gamestart but the first crusade will be to retake Roma so be ready for that.

I am, yet I die anyway. I am trying to bee hop to a distant area to found a viking kingdom yet die before I can even start getting close to my goal

The very early game has a bit of scripted things that just happen and some can be hard to stop. I am not familiar with that one, but it sounds like the other guy is.

Did you try setting the diplomatic range shorter? I find that makes the games a bit more interesting anyway.

Haestein starts with 2 rivals/nemesis with very strong intrigue while he absolutely sucks at intrigue so unless you viking adventure out of the diplomatic range of said enemies, he tends to die... a lot.

It is King of France and Eudes Robertine of Anjou that are rival to you.

Only way to survive multiple murder attempts of them is to get lucky and get a good spymaster (invite knights and finger crossed you get knight with high intrigue and high opinion of you).

All your courtiers hate you and join murder plot because different faith and culture.

Put your high intrigue & opinion of you spymaster disrupt schemes and hope that murder plot is found before triggering.

You have about 2 years of time to disrupt plot from start date before trigger.

Never put a spymaster with negative opinion of you in the job, they just join plot and kill you.
