Petty King vs. Duke?

A Petty Kingdom[en.wikipedia.org] is just a small kingdom relative to other kingdoms around it. An independent Duchy is more of a Grand Duchy[en.wikipedia.org].

In CK3 though, there's no mechanical different really. Just depends on the culture I think. Petty Kingdoms are the same as Duchies in the game, even if it's not the case historically.

in CK3 yes and in CK2 too!

Petty King is just a cultural name for Duke. The same goes for Jarl, it's just a name used in place for Duke for certain cultures.

It is that. It doesn't depend on your culture, but the culture of the realm the person is part of
