advice re: break from the caliphate+revoking titles

Playing as Persian, and am currently trying to break from the caliphate, but the one thing that i am short of is...i am not the liege of my head of faith (previously i've reformed my religion).
If i revoke the titles of his liege (chance is 100%), presumably i am then his liege, and can then break from the caliphate and be head of my own faith ?
Any advice gratefully received.

If you revoke his titles, it'll nuke your piety but it should destroy the caliphate title allowing you to break from the caliphate (I think, haven't tried it this way around but that works if you want to usurp the caliphate).
EDIT: Looking at that screen, I think making him (the Caliph) independent would work as well.

ok...not sure which option to choose.
I've only just revoked the titles of his previous liege and took a tyranny hit, but things seem fairly stable.
Not sure i follow why making him independent would work, but worst comes to worst, i could always invade and retake the land later.

'You are not your Head of Faith's Liege' isn't ticked, which makes sense seeing as you are his liege (I think it means directly or indirectly in the prior case where he was your vassal's vassal), so logically making him independent should tick that box.
EDIT: I'm also not sure whether breaking away would be an option if you did destroy the caliphate. I suspect you'd instead get the option to reform the Sunni caliphate (with you as the Caliph) instead of splitting it into the Maturidi and Ash'ari caliphates but not sure how you reforming Maturidism would factor into that equation either.
EDIT 2: Also... also, probably a bit late now but if you revoked the Caliph's liege's titles just to get the Caliph as a vassal, you could've just retracted the vassal instead. The option's under revoke title. Way less tyranny.

Decided to take the piety hit and revoke his titles....ouch, 2 levels of devotion.
He lost the 'caliphate head' title, and i created a new 'caliphate head' ie me lol
