When happens if i attack the pope ?
So i picked this small county in southern Italy . was able to make peace of Arabian kingdom that still sit in Italy it is 867 by given one of my sons for them to hold . its actually really smart by game to allow such thing . really allow you keep peace .
Now i grow strong . I can easily conquer everyone around me . i have 2000 troops and allies with close to that power so basically i will take away those lands soon enough once i have enough money to wage a war

Problem the pope hold a big land near King of Italy . if i attack him he will call a crusade on me ?
is attacking and taking lands from pope is hard or not smart for me ? Not sure what best action to take

He will start a Crusade against you, if you don't have at least around 200K Troops and he has not high Opinion on your Character.
(High Opinion from the Pope and having at least 200K Troops, prevents Crusades almost completly against you),

Fun Fact: I always conquer, the Kingdom of Romagna, but he always refuses to declare an Crusade against me, instead he goes crusading, the Kingdom of England in the 867 Start Date.

in my game Pope somehow took 1/3 of lands of italy i guess due to idiotic rulers who couldnt control it . he is yet to start a crusade against anyone . he did gave me like 500 gold over years so far haha due to be being in good relationship with him . i want to unite Italy . sadly i think only way is to take few of his lands. i dont mind him keeping rome . he has 3-4 lands around him i think i need to unite . I have no idea maybe that his starting pos . i early into my save . i have alot i can do . no way i have 200k . i have 2k troops and maybe 3k in allies. i never able to touch him then ?
what is a good way to try and take some of his lands without starting world war against me ?

If you are a Catholic Ruler, you can attack the Pope, because he can not declare a Crusade against a Catholic Ruler, Excommunicated or Not, but he will most likely excommunicate you.

Note:
You should still have at least double amount of Troops vs his Troops and a lot of Gold, to hire Mercenaries, to prevent him from hiring Mercenaries against you.

Its easier to assassinate an uncooperative Pope., Get someone more reasonable in there, and then convert him to Witchcraft and he is yours for life. Just gift him an artifact and send gift every once in while and he will constantly give you gold.
