Appointing a new court chaplain
Hello-
I just started a new playthrough. I'm getting the notification that so and so expects a council position.

I'd like to walkthrough the process of appointing a new court chaplain, and the reasons why someone might not be qualified for the job. Also, the skills the player needs to navigate through this part of the game.

I am playing as Khagan Uzur of the Kirghiz Khanate, year 867. Religion Tengriism. I'm still kind of new to the game.

I'd like to replace my court chaplain (high shaman) with this vassal who expects a council position. I clicked on the "appoint" button, but this vassal does not appear in the list.

So then I wondered what the requirements were to be a chaplain. I asked Bing Chat, and it said your courtier must have the "theologian" trait. Sounds fair enough.

I see that the theologian trait is a lifestyle trait. However, my current chaplain does not have this trait. So maybe that trait is not required after all?

This other vassal I want to appoint does not have the trait, either.

Is there a way to see which lifestyle a character has chosen?

Can anyone give me some other hints, as to why a particular vassal cannot be appointed court chaplain?

-Scott

1- Check your religion, it will state whether you CAN appoint a court chaplain or not. 2-Hover over the replacement, it may state a replacement time. Meaning until 24 December 889 you can then replace the chaplain. 3- In such religions, the cool aspect of replacing your chaplain is appointing a child you don't want in succession. 4- Learning ability, followed by Learning Skill Tree, followed by Learning Traits and Skills are the most, in order, able requirements.

Thanks for the ideas.
When I click on the "appoint" button, I get a list of six characters which can be appointed. So I think I can, and do so immediately (there are no time constraints shown).

I see that the learning lifestyle with a theology focus makes sense. How do you find out whether a character has this focus?

When I look at my current chaplain, or the six characters which can replace her, I see no indication of a theology trait, which confuses me.

They will have a trait with 1-5 stars that shows their education and level (4 stars max without the DLC). If it's white, it's learning (green for stewardship, blue for diplomacy, purple for intrigue and red for martial). They will have a random learning focus, but it doesn't really matter if it's theology or not. Generally, you want the person with the highest learning, as long as their opinion of you is above 0 (and thus your court chaplain will support you). Also, many religions do not allow landed vassals other than temple holders to be a court chaplain.

Yeah, there is this man named High Chieftain Menggai who is a very powerful vassal, and expects a council position. My high shaman is terrible, so I'm thinking, which not replace her with Menggai?

When I click on "appoint a high shaman," I'm given a choice of nine candidates, but Menggai is not in the list. One curious thing is that Menggai is a high chieftain, and none of the nine candidates have any kinds of titles like "high chieftain" - actually they are all unlanded, but Menggai has title to three counties and a duchy.

So I guess landed people are not allowed to be shamans in this religion? When I look at the religion, I see no mention of that, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place.

I also looked some more at Menggai, and I can see that he has "grey eminence" with four stars, which is a diplomacy trait, and I wouldn't think of this as a good fit for a shaman, anyway. Besides, his learning is only three.

Note the person you want to appoint has to have your religion too. Probably not the issue but wanted to mention it.

Yes, thanks - he does have the same religion as my character.

The thing about not allowing landed characters to be shamans - I would think to find that under the faith's (Tengriism's) clergy doctrines, but there is nothing about landed people.

However, this faith is theocratic, and maybe there is something about theocratic faiths and landed candidates for clergy...

Yes theocratic is the issue. I think the other option is called Lay Clergy? That allows tribal or feudal vassals to hold temple holdings or the court chaplain position.
