What decides if I get ownership over a county or a vassal after conquest?
I've finished the Ireland tutorial by getting king, but there's still one important point I just don't understand. When I was conquering other counties, I almost always just got a new vassal. Meaning, I'm just getting a small fraction of its taxes, levies, etc.

However, one time it was different and I got to own the conquered county by myself. No idea why. I also remember seeing some kind of Ireland speedrun video where the player almost got to own all the counties he conquered by himself, even exceeding his limit. But I don't know what he was doing different.

Does it depend on the type of claim, or does the previous owner have to die in battle? I watched a few videos about claims and conquest, but that point was never even mentioned.

I think it depends on the Casus Belli used.

Conquer County should give you the county. Same with Holy War, but that should not be an issue in Ireland.

Subjugate CB (or Forced Vassalization, from the Diplomacy perk) obviously vassalizes everyone.

If you´re going to war for someone else´s claim, that someone gets the target if you win, but they should be your vassal.

Not sure off the top of my head how the De Jure CB handles this.

How do I get such a Casus Belli? They correspond to a claim, do they? I think I got most mine via my court bishop. So those are kind of inferior to others? But let's say, I have a duchy title and want to conquer one of the remaing counties that belong to that duchy not owned by me, would that be enough to get ownership of that county instead of a vassal?

In addition it depends on your rank. If your rank is higher then the target rank, you will vassalize them.

Pretty sure the fine print on the bottom of each win condition, war choice, tells you whether the land goes to you or anyone else.

As for Holy wars... I think you keep all the castles that you capture and all the others in the land you're fighting for retain their old Vassels (and if they're of an evil Religion...they'll eventually rebell and will be difficult to convert (refusal to convert makes them a criminal) but there is another % rating for capture and if you fail the capture... well then it's instant revolt of all the vassals who hate you.)

Your government type, kinda dectates what wars you can do. As well as Religion Tenats and Culture Traditions. Clans/Tribes by default can attack neighbors for free, for example. And there is a perk on the Deplomacy Tree that allows you to vasslize smaller AI, (than what you control) or something like that. (Forced Vassalage).

Fighting for a Claim sends it to you (and the Religion dude creates such county claims. But fighting a single county at a time and then haveing to wait for the truce to end... well... takes too long.)

Pretty sure that depends on whether you have a Claim for the County vs. the Kingdom or Duchery. If only for the upper Title, then all the Counties under it become your Vassal. And again if their Faith is Evil, then they're gonna hate you by default.

For Holy War, it says specifically that any titles of rulers with the target´s religion will be usurped (i.e. you get the title), any rulers with your own religion with be vassalized.

I have no idea what happens to titles of rulers with another religion than those two (say you´re Catholic, you´re fighting Holy War against an Ashari ruler who has an Orthodox or Ibadi vassal in his duchy). Never had it come up. My guess would be any rulers with a hostile or evil religion get usurped, any with a righteous or astray religion get vassalized.

Regardless it's not what happend when i took over the Nile in my Mother of us All game; last night.

Come to think of it... I got cities I didn't take over... but I definitly got tons of evil Vassels that hate me and a few castles to myself (I won by capturing an important king or something, so it ended kinda fast). Now I have castles with Muslim/Egyption Vassels on them that I'm stuck with and when I shut it down last night... they were about to revolt for independence. Should be an easy fight, though. I was able to convert them all (a few I had to give a hook as trade) ... but they're still going thru with the indepedance thing, regardless. (I'm going to set athority crown to 3. (luckly for me, it's availiable).. and revolk their titles afer I squash this thing...when I get home today.)

Let's see....
here: https://ck3.paradoxwikis.com/Casus_belli

Holy war CBs
"The following CBs (CB County/Duchy/Kingdom) will cause a holy war instead of a regular one. This requires the Faith to be organized and to not have a tenet that forbids holy wars, such as Pacifism or Dharmic Pacifism. In any case, it can only target a ruler whose faith is considered Hostile or Evil.

if the war ends by enforcing demands, the attacker will gain all titles held by rulers of Hostile or Evil faith and vassalize all other rulers in the war target region. The defender gains twice the fervor the attacker paid."

Nah... I still don't understand the wording of this. My guess is that I got the Castles/counties that were owned by the king, but his vassals kept ownership of their respective counties/castles (and despise me).... that's my guess, anyways.
