Id take the Horse Lords every time. The men at arms is almost a God until Crossbows hit the scene.
20% travel speed is no joke.
Lately I am alll about Travel speed so I can attend more events. Prolific hunters for example is a great choice, as it stacks speed and chunks of half the time for Hunts.
Swords for Hire gives another 10% speed and doubles the amount of Mercs that are available.
Frequent festivities is another Id attach to this travel speed/event attending Culture. More parties.
Depending on your specific location, I would also consider adding things to your culture that your Terrain benefits from. example: Agrarian in farmlands and floodplains, or Mountain Homes. These will boost development and all that fun stuff
You dont have to hybridise. You have the option of just solo adding traditions.
However, if you are aiming for the Norseyboi versions of it, I would piggy back multiple Varangian adventures until you are at the one you want.
World is literally your Oyster. You have 600 years to try and make it work :D
Pursuit is nice and all, but screen is the real gem.
Consider going another route, Caballeros are the BOMB.
This is why I hate pursuit. I am to have my MaA chunking enemy armies out before that phase hits. It is a stat that just enhances winning. I would argue you have already won.
Of course the situational to that are those times you are fighting larger forces that haven't fully come together yet, pursuit can change the overall result of the NEXT fight heavily.
Their real strength until 1050 is that they really can't be countered except for the HAN.
But 30 pursuit as a base number isnt bad either.
They are available up in the scottish lands basically
