Maybe they need to change the whole system. One idea might be that when a crusade happens it takes place on a smaller more specific and simplified map. All the pledged armies could spawn on the different sides or at chosen locations. It might improve the path-finding of the armies on the map. If they want to focus on the armies fighting each other and not the sieges of counties, it would be pretty easy to make up a 'battlefield' map. The winning side could get lots of gold, prisoners and some relics allocated as per war contribution. Forget about the beneficiary, the 'target' empire could possibly just convert to the winning religion. (Or have a strong motivation to do so and incur costs or difficulties if they don't). If they really want to keep the beneficiary, let it be anyone.
