Theres only so much space, but if you also own the toe of jesus(making that up), people would know and it would bring you a bit more prestige. Not as much as it would if it were displayed but still, people knowing you own it would bump you a bit.
I mean to be fair, for decades I had no idea the British royal family owned the most coveted and controversial diamond in the world. Many others did, of course, but it's possible that if I'm an English king, a duke in Sicily isn't gonna know that I have that toe.
We gotta keep in mind that information didn't travel back then quite like it does today. Most counts wouldn't really know or care what was going on outside their castle, apart from gossip about their peers at court.
I can see the logic in doing this within the realm or even a region, of course, but the tricky thing with artifacts is that it's reflected as prestige gain. Prestige climbs independent of things like region. Then again this is true of everything that increases prestige, so who knows? Maybe this is perfectly logical.
