Being a Catholic is really lame in Ck3
It is REALLY hard coming from Ck2 to this game.
Even before Holy Fury, the system in Ck2 was much better for playing as a Catholic.

Oh the pope doesn't like me cause he's French and Im German and cause I ♥♥♥♥♥♥ his sister the Queen of Aquatine? Time to install a better Pope.

Oh my Realm priest is a Lustful, Gluttonous, Callous Bisexual who ♥♥♥♥♥♥ my daughter?
Oh well.....nothing I can do about that...cant even make him my Rival.....

I really miss being able to land one of my Sons as a Arch Bishop and then work his way into becoming pope. That was a fun sorta side quest for Ck2.

Being a lot of things in this game is lame. I'm still waiting for them to revamp nomads, right now they are being treated as tribals no different than Vikings in Scandinavia.

And catholic, is the only faith, who your Vassals can convert randomly to another Faith and you get no messages for it(via Pilgrimages).

Catholicism sucks until you realize the pope is central to it. I certainly agree Catholicism could be better, but basically just have to kiss the papal ass until you can use him as an ATM to build your own empire. The pope can also remove certain negative traits and associated debuffs via buying indulgences, IE adulterer and the like.

It needs improvement, and even the "dismantle the papacy" option is anti-climactic and needs to be expanded, but if you start using the pope as a tool and a resource you can make it work for you.

A shame, the AI does not use it, because it has never happen to me, that an AI character with crime traits, goes to the HoF, to buy them out of their Crimes.

Yes this! When I play as a Catholic the first thing I do is try to befriend the pope and learn the language. And then pretend to be a goodie-two-shoes to stock up on piety. Since there are so many rulers in the game with sinful traits, the pope is very likely to give you the claim you want. And you can have people you don't like excommunicated.

But I do think OP is right. You can't do anything directly about priests. And they have to be on your council, even if you have a vassal who fits the job much better. In my games those priests usually die under mysterious circumstances.

The fact it can auto generate you a priests with like 3 intelligence is stupid.

Just make your own Catholic faith, make yourself the new pope, seduce the other pope, take his land and then make him convert lol

Basically this. Even though costs now scale with eras, gold gains from pope do as well. And with piligrimages staying at the top level of devotion is trivial.

I wish they took a step further and let us do Avignon Papacy stuff, essentially making him our pawn and overriding the usual limitations, like a strong hook that gets inherited. Divorce who we want, appoint our own bishops, excommunicate people who we dislike - that sort of thing.

Holy furry was the last update, there were lots of religious updates during the course of the game, monks and mystics was another pretty big one that was also years down the road.

Post suggestions on how you would like to see things changed.

as for your issue, have you tried getting secrets or a hook?

they definitely need to reintroduce sects all the religions feel flat they need to create a satanist/nerd/faithful system and make government type more dynamic forming a new religion is a cool idea but feels weird as it is religious reform should be a slow process maybe starting with many tiny reinterpretations of cannon law until a martin Luther/Muhammad appears.
