viking (or raider) trait
What is the best way to gain viking trait ? The wiki says it's an event trait that "can only be gained by events". Is there a better chance to get it by raiding places with my character as commander ?

Looking at the code, 20 raids is the minimum needed, though the chance of getting it goes up the more you keep raiding. Pretty sure they do not need to be consecutive, so you should be able to keep the tally going even if you disband your army for a while.

It takes an aggregate amount of gold to get. My geusstimate is about 500g. Leave one Commander leading the Raiding Party until he gets the Trait.
My Ruler usually has it as i like to change the Raid Commander after each one attains it.
For example, when my heir turns 16 i will put him in Command until he has Viking(that way he has it already when he becomes Ruler).
You can put your Marshall in Command & he will get it, too...or your Spymaster, Master of the Hunt, Horse, anyone you feel would benefit from xtra martial & prowess.
So basically the only criteria (that i know of after a few 1000hrs of gameplay) is just amass around 500 gold & the Commander of the Raiding Party will earn his Viking Patch.
Gold has nothing to do with it. After 20 raids there is a chance every raid, which also goes up with more raids. Though annoyingly, there is a delay between when the event to give it to you is triggered, and when you actually get it, of 6 months to over a year. Which explains why I've gotten the event when I wasn't raiding before.

By 20 raids I meant individual baronies, not entire raid campaigns. If you are getting it after only 2 baronies, then that is way too quick and something else is going on. Maybe a mod, or bug.
I have noticed some bugs with saved variables since a recent update, perhaps its affecting the counter this event uses too.

You need to make them lead the raiders, or atleast that is how it has worked for me. It doesn't take that long. Typically i can get it in about 5 years of typically raiding.

I'm not sure if it's an exact number of counties, Or if there is a chance for it to fire after a certain amount.. I haven't really tracked it to be honest. So it's either exact number, or after a certain number it has a chance and then by X counties it will be added if it hasn't at that point. That's the way it feels to me, as sometimes it seams to take me longer than others. Perhaps it's just because i those games/times i'm just not raiding enough which can certainly be the case.

Anyway the most important thing is just leading and raiding, You'll get it eventually.

Never used a mod. I dont need any crutches.

Like i said, take 10 minutes & play Hasty. Use your Marshall for TWO raids
(filling your Longships both times) & your Marshall will have the Viking trait.

If i want my heir to have the Physician trait, the Wise Man trait, the Pilgrim trait... i can do that, too. Its easy....
Two full raids with a large army is likely more than 20 baronies. So yea, what you said will work, but simply because starting as anyone who can raid and has a large army, makes getting the trait quite trivial. Which isn't a surprise.

The code for this is in /events/war_events/raid_events.txt
0021+0022 should happen every time an army raids a holding, and only for the army commander

raiding.0021

Checks if the raiding army commander has the "raid_counter" variable
If he doesn't have it, add the variable
If he already has it, increase it by 1

raiding.0022

Checks if the raiding army commander has 20 or more count in the raid_counter variable
If he has 20+ and doesn't have the Raider trait already:

20% chance for any raid that after 180-545 days, the event "raiding.0023" will fire
At 30, 40 and 50 in the raid_counter, the chance for this event increases by 10 each.

So this capped at 50 completed holdings raided, with a 50% chance for any raid to trigger the next event after 180-545 days:

raiding.0023

Let them weep at my name (event to actually receive the raider trait)

So for a norse raider who can raid almost unlimited overseas, the biggest obstacle is the 180-545 wait time, and this is all running completely hidden with no progress indication for the player.

Amassing an aggregate total of about 500g (again, just an educated guess informed by attaining the Viking trait at least a hundred times over many campaigns) & using the same commander, it will take you between 6-12 months anyway.

"Let them weep at my name" only occurs when you use your Ruler. I rarely see that since when my heir comes of age i immediately put him in command of a Raiding Party until he gets Viking. Same if you use your Marshall, Spy, little brother, etc. You'll need to click their portrait to see if they won it.
False. Just because you don't see the event does not mean it didn't happen. You do not see the events for ai characters unless the event is coded to send you a notification.

As noted in the first post, you can unlock the trait by raiding a minimum number of locations. The value of the locations doesn't matter, and you don't even have to return with the treasure for it to count towards the trait.
