Absolute Authority before founding an Empire?
I'm not completely familiar with the intricacies, but I suspect without absolute authority I have a larger possibility of losing my empire.

What and where are you playing because it does not give me that option.

Absolute authority often makes it so vassals can't fight without using a hook on you. Double check to make sure it doesn't stop them from attacking neighboring countries or you'll be doing all expanding yourself, unless that's what you want of course.

I typically do the 3rd authority, high I think, since it will increase the taxes but only give a small opinion malus unless I'm trying to move to a different govt type in which you need all 4 authorities I believe.
A big threat to your empire will be succession until you get a favorable law in place, also try to keep the strongest of the empire vassals happy and it'll help keep the empire together longer. Don't lose heart if civil wars happen though, its a chance to purge the dregs and replace them with loyalists. And swaying people can save you gold from bribes.

Ireland I think you want all 4 levels of authority cause it'll let you go feudal, just try to make the swap to feudal quickly cause the opinion malus is like -20 or -30 and liberty factions will pop up like weeds.

My gaelic-norse culture doesn't allow direct inheritance, so that's not an option. Which is why I'm leaning full authority, to get rid of threats. Of course right now, some how a man got my spy master position and I can't fire him for 15 years, so there's that threat. But if I found a empire, I believe that allows for stronger inheritance or at least a stronger claim. If not I can still do what I've been doing which is give the best lands to my direct heir and let him fight or vassalize everyone every generation until my culture changes.

Tribal Authority 4 doesn't give any advantages for you, it only decreases vassal opinion further. So only implement this if you want to go feudal/clan.

For anyone with an unorganised faith yes, but if you have an organised faith (e.g. Insular Catholic) there is not penalties.

It actually says "-30 direct vassal opinion", while lvl 3 tribal only gives -10

The opinion penalty from being unreformed is always there

Tribal Authority opinion penalty has nothing to do with religion. Only reason to increase to level 4 is to go Feudal.

Then it was nerfed recently because it used to only apply to unorganised religion vassal opinion.

No, it’s always been like that.

crown authority 3 stops vassals from declaring wars on each other unless they have a hook on liege and gives +10% taxes at the cost of a -10 to opinion which is trivial

crown authority 4 gives +30% taxes and the ability to designate heir on top of stopping vassal wars but you get a -30 opinion which is actually relevant but entirely easy to manage by maxing out court aneminites and grandeur while focusing on stewardship to get the perks that give a +30 to opinion

Personally I always stick with crown authority 3 and leave it at that since money is never a problem and I used other methods to make sure my inheritance goes smoothly.
