Mostly they fight amongst themselves. They expand through inheriting.
I can't think of a significant time my vassal has went to war, if ever honestly.
I want to form my own borders but the AI vassals think it's cool to destroy those THICC curves I made :(
Always a demotivator when I play this game
Just internal wars.
Best you can do as feudal or clan is Crown authority 3 which stops inter vassal wars, or level 4 which stops wars. But this only applies to your direct vassals, so their vassals can still start stuff.
Alternatively, keep the vassals at the boarder regions weaker, since they are less likely to start stuff unless they have strong allies.
I've found that just leaving it at crown authority 3 with proper individual vassal contracts makes for a much smoother reign in the long run.
That's Level 3. "Vassals cannot declare war on fellow vassals without a hook on the liege"
Level 4 "Vassals cannot declare war without a hook on the liege"
It usually helps far more than it hurts me.
Okay. And the alternative is an enemy AI holds those counties and builds stupid stuff. But now you get the taxes. How is that a loss?
