How does chess work in this game?

I dont see any connection with the narrative text in between each round and which trait (martial/intrigue/learning) I should select for my moves. I've looked around online and all I've found is "it's rock/paper/scissors and I never lose". yeah, that's not very helpful.

can someone please explain for me? Is there an obvious indication within the narrative text of which trait I should select for my moves?

As far as I can tell, it just checks your level in whichever skill you picked against the opponent's level in whichever skill counters the one you picked, probably with some RNG mixed in because it's Paradox. The winning strategy is just to pick whichever option has the best combination of you having a high level in that skill and your opponent having a low level in the countering skill, then just spam only that one option repeatedly until you win. Not sure if the AI looks at comparative skill levels at all, or if they just roll the dice and pick an option randomly every time.

I pick whichever set of trait vs trait gives me the biggest advantage and use it till I win or (occasionally) lose. I don't think there's anything more to it than that.

so the narrative text is just fluff?

By the loose definition of 'fluff,' Yes, the narrative text is just fluff.
It's a BIT more complicated than that, but in the end an actual game of chess is more complicated than that minigame :b.

maybe someone will mod an actual 'speed chess' (the one with 5 pieces)!

No the text gives you a hit how you are doing.
At least I think it works that way (I am not sure if its true tho)

eg:
"head to head" - guess no real progress
"he's starting to win" - your move was not good (he gained points)
"I'm Starting to win" - the other way round

The first text gives you a hint what his strategy was (martial-intrigue-Learning) and how strong you were affected.

on the buttons you can see a tooltip whats good
in Chess:
martial -> contered by intrigue -> which is contered by learning -> which is contered by martial

The AI will most likely pick its strongest stat.
Eg if your enemy is high in Martial and youre high in learning you should not pick learning first since it would be countered immediatly.
I would go for intrigue and look how good it was.
Again you can get a hint in the first paragraph what he took.

Also I think some RNG is involved both in your moves and oponent choices and move.

Other games working like chess but with different stat requirements and counters
good luck

The text also gives you hints to what option the AI picked. If for example it mentions something like "crushing opponents" then it probably went Martial and you should counter with Intrigue. If it talks about "Secrecy" then it likely went Intrigue and you should go with Learning.
It gets muddy when it mentions something about how difficult "managing a realm is" because there's no stewardship choice so you're sort of guessing.

It's rock, paper, scissors, where you're blindfolded and the opponent is describing what they threw instead.

Spamming whatever option matches your highest skill is a strategy, but not necessarily the best one.
