putting the pope in his place
So I'm sure this has been asked before. But assuming as an emperor level title, you force the pope to bend the knee and become a vassal.

Aside from the usual forming factions, attempting assasinations and the like all vassals can do. What exactly can the Pope do?

Can he still call crusades against you if you are his liege but of another religion? Assuming you have the title of King of Romagna so none of the counties are owned by vassals who report to him to prevent title revocation and assuming you have enough crown authority to prevent him from declaring a war against a fellow vassal, can he still call holy wars against counties to retake them from your vassals even if you are his liege?

You need a empire title to make him a vassal because the papacy is a Kingdom title. After taking Unify Italy decision he will be unlanded. He will most likely excommunicated you though, so be ready for that. he will also buy a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of mercenaries. The pop only call crusades against evil faith religious leaders.

I'm already an Emperor so that's no issue and defeating him militarilly even with all his mercenaries is not an issue either I've basically been playing tall at the empire level so my empire is very strong for it's size and the year (1200)

And he can't excommunicate me because I'm not a christian.

My question relates to crown authority and holy wars/head of faith. Does crown authority trump his ability to call crusades and holy wars?

If you are not christian he will most likely call holy wars on you yes.

Well, you didn't speak specifically on what I'm about to say, but "putting the Pope in his place" for me means taking the "Dismantle the Papacy" choice that is available to people who are not of a Christian religion. I do it every chance I get. I hate that idiot and all of his self-entitled incarnations.

unfortunately, it's not entirely true. The decision is not available to african pagan faiths only Norse, Baltic and Finnish faiths along with muslims.

Since I'm a reformed Kushite religion, unfortunately then I can't take the decision even if I fulfill the requirements, which incidentally why I was asking.

Killing him doesn't solve the problem because then he just gets replaced by another and neither does taking away all his landed titles because at that point he just because an unlanded ruler walking around with a king level title.

So I thought if I could force him to become my vassal and use crown authority to put him in his place by putting him a position where he could not declare war on me or my vassals because of my high crown authority, then he'd be forced to stew in one county and shut the hell up. Which would solve the problem

But if high crown authority doesn't stop the pope from declaring crusades and holy wars, then it's effectively pointless for me to waste time to cross the meditteranean to force him into vassalage.

He can not call a crusade against you, if you are his liege, this would be treason.

A AI vassal can only attack his liege through civil wars.

Have a claim on one of his titles, currently there is a bug and you conquer some titles with the claim casus belli, you vassalize the holder of this title, if the holder has a lower tier than you.

I did it, multiple times with pope, by claiming rome with my realm priest and after the war the pope was my vassal.
