I also found it in my best interest to release one of the sheikhs, who is a useful muppet. The others can rot in the dungeon as long as they like to cling on to life. Since Emir Abdul-Madjid of the Madjid Emirate is old and infirm, and Sheikh Youkhanna of Agadir is a loon, and Sheikh Georgios of Tinmallal is a leper, in some cases that won't be long.
But I need to keep control as long as is feasible. A couple of generations of instituional fratricide and so far a lack of sons have left me with a dense cousin once removed as heir. Gotta spawn a few boys quickly now...!

The sheikh in question had all of 5 intrigue, btw.
Danyal, after recovering from that ghastly slash across his face, ordered him imprisoned, he rose in rebellion, but was captured in battle, then soon reduced in size by a head's length.
The whole experience has made Danyal callous and wrathful, and we're sure he'll be totally adored and beloved by everybody in the sultanate when (if) he grows up to be a big boy.
Intrigue's just not for me, I guess.
Use your kids to secure alliances with powerful vassals and foreign powers that could help you win a war with them.
Then you'll have to deal with sucession, the easy/cheesy way is to just disinherit all the other sons, or get them killed, but you can also conquer a lot of lands instead and give them to your other sons so they will leave your heir's lands alone when you die.
And isn't it funny how the arabic/muslim world of that time period was nonetheless involved in an almost constant civil war?
This is power. Humans will do anything to get it and keep it. The same crap is going on now as it was back then.
In the end it is all very situational and there is no one way to deal with any set of problems.

I can't help but think that something bad will happen soon.
