You can check out the game called Sengoku. It is the same game as CK, but in Japan.
They will not add Japan to CK, because they have the other game Sengoku.
Sengoku is even older than CK2. It won't stop them from adding Japan if they want to.
They probably will not add Japan, but hey, I also thought that about India in CK2 and yet here we are.
However, India's boarders are so naturally against map expansion, with thick jungles to the East and literally the tallest mountains to the north, that India simply makes a good stopping point for the scope of the game.
Plus, not many people play in India to begin with to warrant expanding the map just for them (and even then, like I said with geography, the west was more relevant to India than the East)
Edit: they did also expand Africa which I think is neat.
In the meantime, there are several (quite lovely) total conversions that change the map and mechanics to medieval Japan.
Thank you for the heads up. I'll see what the mods offer. I had never heard of Sengoku...but after looking at it, it just seems to old for me to get into. Certainly would be interested in a Sengoku II game.
Especially something like China/Japan/Korea which would get a lot of attention for how culturally rich and interesting those parts are.
Sengoku was a test bed for CKII. It is quite old and clunky by our standards. More than anything, though, it's a Skynet simulator: at Realm Divide, all of the AI gangs up on the human player and steamrollers them into extinction. I've never heard of anyone able to beat it.
Sengoku II would be great. The Honour system in Sengoku was revolutionary and I still believe it is an excellent game mechanic. If the dev could take what they learned from CKII and III and apply it to a new Japan game, that would be terrific!
