When will Japan be added?
This game looks pretty good...but I'm just not that interested in the post roman European world. Were so many people really clamoring for Iberia content...that seems surprising to me. I was really hoping that DLC was going to be Japan.

There are mods that add East Asia. Seems unlikely that Paradox will add it anytime soon.

If you want Japan. you are playing the wrong game.

You can check out the game called Sengoku. It is the same game as CK, but in Japan.

They will not add Japan to CK, because they have the other game Sengoku.

They might add it later. Next DLC is just a flavor pack so don't expect it to be anything major.

Sengoku is even older than CK2. It won't stop them from adding Japan if they want to.

They base it off of where people are playing. Iberia is one of the most played in regions, the region is under-developed, so they chose Iberia. The more everyone plays in a region the more likely they are to develop content for it.

They probably will not add Japan, but hey, I also thought that about India in CK2 and yet here we are.
However, India's boarders are so naturally against map expansion, with thick jungles to the East and literally the tallest mountains to the north, that India simply makes a good stopping point for the scope of the game.
Plus, not many people play in India to begin with to warrant expanding the map just for them (and even then, like I said with geography, the west was more relevant to India than the East)

Edit: they did also expand Africa which I think is neat.

We're not currently planning on expanding the map to include Japan, but we never rule anything out entirely. A lot can happen over the course the game's lifespan, after all!

In the meantime, there are several (quite lovely) total conversions that change the map and mechanics to medieval Japan.

Thank you for the heads up. I'll see what the mods offer. I had never heard of Sengoku...but after looking at it, it just seems to old for me to get into. Certainly would be interested in a Sengoku II game.

I'm hoping for more European and Middle-Eastern content first. I'm really hopeful they start leaning into the Crusader King aspect of the game, as I've felt like crusading is barely important to the game. To that end I expect (and hope) to see the HRE, British Isles, France, Bulgaria and Lithuania to be fleshed out first, as well as the Seljuks, Ottomans, Umayyads (maybe they get fleshed out in the Iberia DLC via the Emirate of Cordoba) and Abbasids.

I think that adding Eastern Asia/Japan/Indonesia/South Africa would be go over very well with how much Paradox likes their DLC.
Especially something like China/Japan/Korea which would get a lot of attention for how culturally rich and interesting those parts are.

Sengoku was a test bed for CKII. It is quite old and clunky by our standards. More than anything, though, it's a Skynet simulator: at Realm Divide, all of the AI gangs up on the human player and steamrollers them into extinction. I've never heard of anyone able to beat it.

Sengoku II would be great. The Honour system in Sengoku was revolutionary and I still believe it is an excellent game mechanic. If the dev could take what they learned from CKII and III and apply it to a new Japan game, that would be terrific!

The CK3 mod Shogunate is pretty good! It covers the warring states and sengoku era so there's plenty of bookmarks to start a game from.
