Why is Paderborn the Holy site for Asatru?
Hihi,

I'm playing in Ironman and was just clicking around religions and noticed that Paderborn was the holy site for Asatru. I can't recall if this has ever been mentioned to me of historical or religious reference so does anyone know?

Yea. Allegedly the Irminsul was located in Marsberg near Paderborn.

This was all lore of the Saxon world. Irminsul was not connected to Asatru in anyway, and Charlemagnes campaign was European. There is not a shred of data to insinuate otherwise, it goes against known history, theology, and archaeology.

Wrong.

The franks themselves report it in the Annales regni Francorum, which were created during the time of charlemagne.
Also other contemporary sources mention it, like the monk Rudolf of Fulda.

The word Asatru btw is a modern day creation and just refers to germanic paganism in a broader sense.
And since the saxons were germanic pagans during the time of charlemagne, the irminsul was very much connected to "Asatru".

Call my crazy, but wasn't there a holy site in Sjaelland originally?

There was - not entirely sure when they moved it or why as "Lejre" on SJælland certainly used to be a holy site. They also moved the one in "Zeeland" for some reason. I suppose they wanted to spread them out a bit more to make it more difficult to reform the religion. Historically the new sites don't make much sense other than that "there was a viking presence at the time".

Paderborn is because they thought that's where a magic tree was from, the one in Norway is because that's where the sagas take place, the one in Sweden is because that's where the sacrificial temple was until they replaced it with a christian church, the one in England is because that's where Halfdan landed, and the one in Kyiv is because of Dyre the Stranger. I think there's some legend about vikings being invited to western Russia and helping the people build up their civilization.
