Favourite movie/series with CK3 vibes?
I love to pair my games with movies/series from similar/close time periods.
Anyone do the same? What are you watching?
Starting to watch "The last Kingdom" now. Brittania sucked.
Vikings of course, goes without saying!

Knightfall (series, set 1291-1307)
was pretty good. Wish it was longer but, still good. The fall of the Knights Templar.

Ironclad (film, set around 1215-1217)
about the First Baron's War against the tyranical King John of England. Great if you like Seven Samurai, The Magnificent Seven, Seven Swords.
Paul Giamatti does a great performance of King John.

Kingdom of Heaven (film, set 1184-1187)
a historical drama during the Crusades, defending the city of Jerusalem against Saladin trying to reclaim it. I personally thought the film was... okay, other people really liked it though.

Braveheart (film, set 1280-1314)
William Wallace leads a Scottish rebellion against England and it's king, Edward "Longshanks". It's extremely inaccurate but, it's iconic.

The King (2019 film)
Hal becomes King Henry V of England and the war against France and it's king, Charles VI.

crossing over a little from CK3 and EU4
Borgia (not to be confused with The Brogias) (2011 series, set 1492-1507)
Similar to Game of Thrones, politics, scheming, murder, betrayal. Rodrigo Borgia's rise to power as Pope Alexander VI. The, rise, rule and fall of the Borgia family throughout the Italian Renaissance. Leonardo Da Vinci, Niccolo Machiavelli and others make an appearance. Brilliant series if you like Assassin's Creed 2 or just the time period. John Doman does as great job as Rodrigo and Mark Ryder does one of the best character performances I've ever seen on screen as Cesare.
Borgia is my second favourite TV series behind Mr Robot.

Thanks DENTON! Havent seen the king or nightfall! Appreciate the information! I have also enjoyed rome 2005 and the Tudors/ Borgia! They all kind of fit into this scene!
Edit: Haven't seen ironclad either, thanks!

Rome was really terrific, and along with The Sopranos and Band Of Brothers allowed HBO to have a truly great run of TV shows. EDIT: As well... From The Earth To The Moon!

This list is pretty interesting. I don't much consider medieval shows as being very good as a whole, though. You can reliably place "Robin Hood: Men In Tights" and "When Things Were Rotten" as viable choices as the bar for excellence is low. Well, Mel Brooks is a genius, there is that.

There are shows that concentrate on the armour and the warfare, but then they lack much in the way of a human element. Or you have stories that shoehorn modern values into medieval context, but parkour CG knights don't satisfy. The last resort is to make it silly or funny, which is why Army Of Darkness will always be great to me.

Outlaw King was a good film. It's on Netflix.

Barbarians is great, but about Romans. still, they fight with swords and whatnot.

There are others, but I haven't seen them so I'll leave them be.

The Lion in Winter (1968)

Wow. How do you all play a game and watch a movie at the same time? I listen to audiobooks while I play CK3, but at least my eyes are engaged only on the game. You guys must be geniuses! : >

Hmm I took it to mean they watch the movie/show during times when they are not playing but I agree I couldn’t play and watch at the same time.

Vikings, Kingdom of Heaven, Robert the Bruce and Bastard Executioner I have watched since playing.

I've seen people in real life actually do this but never bothered to ask. I thought I'd take the opportunity here...

hah! no, not at the same time. But I like a good movie from a similar time period to get into the mood. I usually play CK3 from 9-12, and wrap it up with a movie from 12-1! Love it.
I did the same when I played HOI4. Really enjoyed movies from same time period while playing the game. Just something I picked up over the years. Always wondered if others enjoyed the same.

Rob Roy, another mint classic, albeit a little later in the time period

I can not believe that no one mentioned "The Pillars of the Earth" yet (8 episode series).
Absolutely essential viewing and major CK vibes.

I was looking for a trailer but they are spoiling way too much, just go in blind and have faith that it will be good.

Those are classics! You reminded me of A Man For All Seasons, which I recall watching as a stage play... dang, it had some famous actor in it as well, Shatner or Keanu... I just don't recall as it was a long time ago. I'm almost medieval myself.

There was Keanu Reeves in Hamlet, I heard that was something to behold. So then there are a number of great Shakespeare productions on the subject. If you don't see them in the round, you can always find a Kenneth Branaugh version. Good stuff!

If I watch TV as I play games, it's usually just sports.
