courtiers never have children?
why is it that my courtiers don't have children even if I marry them off. While my marriage partner always popps out one child after the other...

The amount of children a character can have is defined in the 'Defines' file and is based on rank. AI can exceed this of course but most won't, you can change the average by altering line 285 in the defines file.

BASE_NR_OF_CHILDREN_PER_COUPLE = { 1 1 2 3 5 5 }

above is the ranking so basically unlanded and baron characters will generally only have 1 child, counts 2, dukes 3 and kings/emperors 5. As someone already stated this is also affected by the characters parents so if you have a wandering courtier show up whose mother is a countess then your new courtier can have an average of 2 children.
I've made my own alteration to give 5 to all characters which works well but there is also a mod on the workshop which increases it too. The mod gives a huge buff to the amount of children born but also increases childhood disease. I suggest if you want to have your courtiers to have more kids then make your own mod in 2 minutes and have fun.

They have children, but very rarely. I guess you can claim they have children but just don't raise them on court as there's no justification for their presence there. If the courtiers are from your dynasty they do have children on court.

so how will i get new courtiers then? this was better in previous games

Courtiers have very low fertility when not married to a ruler (and maybe their children, as well; I forget). It's to help prevent lag from useless characters producing useless children. If you want a character to breed, make sure they or their spouse are landed.

The main way to obtain new courtiers is to recruit them from your Guests, which you can find in your Court menu. The bigger your realm is, the better your selection will be. There are also a few minor decisions like "Invite Claimants/Knight" which will attract Guests to your court. You can also just invite courtiers from other realms directly to your realm through their character portrait.

As well, the Marshall's Train Commanders job will generate new martial-focussed characters on occassion, and you can recruit prisoners from your dungeon in exchange for their freedom.

It's pointless anyways because they have children they get no formal training. so they have terrible traits and subpar stats and like 3 prowess. unless you micro manage them and look every couple years for their offspring. then you have to also set them a education and someone to educate them once they're 6. its time consuming and rather worthless effort because game randomly generates better characters you can just invite to your court. if you want to to have 3-4 kids you have to get young couple with good fert traits and ensure male isn't a knight.

Honestly this is area of CK3 that needs work the entire courtier system. they should play more of a role with their own stories/pop ups. as it stands they're fairly useless other than high prowess knights to die in combat... or someone to produce your character bastards.

I have the same issue, I just arranged marriages for a couple of courtiers with people from other countries and after 20 years none of them have children, I only have 21 courtiers.

I looked for a mod unfortunately there's not a single one.
It's hard to have skilled courtiers and grow your court if they never have kids.

That's odd. I've never had an issue with my courtiers breeding. Do you have a particularly large court? That can affect it I believe.

This thread has basically killed my dream of having a wandering traveler come to my kingdom from the far east, welcoming him into my court, and having his family live parallel to mine to one day have my Marshal say "My family has served yours' for generations. My father was your father's Marshal, and his father your father's father's. We have always sought to serve the family who brought ours in from the wastes."

You know, just give him a barony? That's a thing in this game. You can do all these things. You can roleplay his family being your marshals for centuries.

That's only fair because you only brought them in to romance his mother. CK3 in a nutshell.

Courtiers have normal fertility as everyone else in the game, but their child limit is 1 and have a chance of having a child limit of 0 with a 50% chance.

It is better to capture princess of kings and emperors, recruit them and marry them to your courtiers, so they have a child limit of 5 childs.

It's things like this that ruin immersion for me.

Well if they didnt do that then it would ruin the game. The game already struggles for some people who dont have a good computer and adding more pointless calculations (because the vast majority of courtiers will never be interacted with) would simply add more overhead for little point. This is simply a choice between causing more lag for more immersion, therefore locking more people out of playing the game due to increased requirements. Or they could just put in a cap to make sure that doesnt happen.

this was not a problem in CK1 or CK2 though.

This is only a problem for low level courts. If you have the number one ranked court in the world, for example, you can quite literally invite almost anyone you like to your court and they will come.
It is coded on purpose so the birth rate is lower for unlanded folk and higher for landed folk to keep the population of the game manageable.
You can break this a little by breeding fecund across everyone in the game though but the game coding will simply then arrange for more "random" accidents to befall everyone.
