Playing as a minor character?

When starting a new game I'd like t start as a minor character with only 1 duchy, not a lord. How can I do this as I only seem to be able to choose a lord initially, when I try to choose a vassal it always defaults to the lord above him for his area. What am I missing here anyone?

Guess you need to start with the settings of everyone start out as a nobody -)

you can play as a minor character, you're probably just missing something. im not in game rn so i can't recall off the top of my head, sorry, but you can play as a minor for sure.

You click on a start date, you click "play any character" button at bottom-left, you click on any realm. That will select the top liege and show their vassals as a flags on a map. You should be able to click them. If they have vassals of their own, they will now appear as flags as well.

Yes like Avatar said u click new game then play as Any landed character u cam choose anyone thats a count or above until emperor.

Its valid for all landed characters bar Barons!

You can also just zoom in some more until you get to the smaller flags. I always start as a count, I like working my way up from a single location to an empire.

Actually you have to click the county a few times more. E.g. if I want to play as count Radboud of Holland, if I zoom in on Holland it still says King Lothaire of Lotharingia. If I click on Holland it says Jarl Hröreker, Duke of Holland. But if I click again on Holland, it selects Count Radboud of Holland.

Just a note- You can also create your own ruler in the county you choose instead of playing the historical lord.

Playing as a tiny 1 county lord is plenty viable and you can grow immensely within just 1-2 rulers if you play your cards right.
