Alternate History?
I saw this game being promoted as an Alternate History simulator.

So is it like, you start at a historic moment and can reshape destiny from there, or does it have different timelines?

Because if it has different timelines, like an alternate history where Rome never fell, that'd be super interesting.

No basically you start from a point-in-time, but not the AI nor you follow any specific historical time-line, nor is there any real incentive to do so. There are some semihistorical events that can pop-up under certain conditions, but once the game starts it is a free for all.

Ah cool, I remember a youtube video of like a steampunk DLC or something for CK2 and I was interested but CK 2 had like hundreds of dollars of DLC and a lot of it was like cosmetic stuff but I couldn't tell how important it was to the cultures they were for and I was like

"Nope nope nope nope nope"

But CK3 seems way more straight forward about what it's trying to sell me so it'd be really cool if they had alternate history packs.

You basically live the new history in CK3. Vikings in Tibet? Go for it. Eastern Roman Empire retakes Western Europe? Make it happen.

There are also 100s of mods that go from adding convenience to completely changing the game.

While calling CK3 an alt history simulator isn’t spot on, it’s also not wrong. Give it a try, it’s a lot of fun.

There might be a mod for CK2 that's steampunkish but I don't know of any big ones that fit the definition. CK3's mods are still being worked on though.

Also, assuming CK3 stays in development, there's going to be just as many DLC for 3 as there was with 2. That's been Paradox's MO for awhile now and I doubt it's going to change any time soon.

DLCs aren't usually alternative history. In CK2 there was only two, one DLC where the American Aztecs invaded (which is currently a mod for CK3 right now), and a furry world where animals took over kingdoms (this was mostly cosmetic). Alternative history is more of a mod thing than a DLC thing, and I think other Paradox games have a more robust alternative history modding community.

Ah, I guess it was a mod and I just thought it was a DLC. I hope CK3 doesn't do the mountains of purely cosmetic DLC that seems sort of like it should have been included in a core DLC pack route, like, with CK2 that really put me off to it, I was like "Wait do I NEED the DLC to make the different cultures in Britannia recognizable and distinctive"

I don't mind more substantive DLC but some stuff just doesn't seem like it should be DLC you know?

You know those little toy icons you move around the board in monopoly? The cosmetic DLC is for those things. Just pieces to move around the board nothing major. Or, in CK3’s case, clothing too. It’s nothing major or anything and there’s plenty variety base game.

So far they haven’t released any purely cosmetic stuff outside of preorders.

The major difference between the actual DLCs between 3 and 2 is that 2 would just take random things away and lock them behind DLC walls, so you could still see something was missing but because you didn’t have the DLC you couldn’t interact with it. With 3 they’ve modernized the model quite well where now you have a limited mechanic that you can play with and if you buy the DLC you’ll expand those bundled mechanics deeper.

Yeah that's what really put me off to 2, I could tell they were doing that just by looking at the DLC and I was like "Nope, not gonna pay $400 in DLC just to be sure I get the full experience"

Some of the cosmetic DLC also gave the impression that without it, you'd basically just have placeholder units and stuff.
